The New Borkum Lighthouse , nautically correctly called the Big Borkum Lighthouse , is located in the western part of the city center of the island of Borkum and is one of three lighthouses on the island.

After the old lighthouse Borkum burned down, the new lighthouse was built in record time in 1879. There were less than five months between the laying of the foundation stone on May 1 and the topping-out ceremony on September 20. The Royal Prussian Waterways and Shipping Administration in Norden had already completed the construction plans for the erection by this time: they wanted to build a new tower anyway. The commissioned designer was Ernst Schumacher from Leer , who had already designed the lighthouse on Norderney that was put into operation on October 1, 1874 .

The still active lighthouse has been used for orientation in front of the mouth of the Ems since November 15, 1879. At the same time, the lighthouse has had another beacon since October 1, 1891, which is now the cross- branding beacon with the name Westerems . It indicates a change of course for the ships sailing in the Außenems from the Westerems fairway to the Randzelgat . The tower was by the Royal General-Directorate of hydraulic engineering in the massive construction of brick masonry . There were for the 60.3 m high round tower built around 1.5 million black-brown bricks. 315 steps lead to the top. The lighthouse is open daily during the season and can be visited and climbed.

When it was commissioned, the lighthouse received a 3 m high rotating lens lamp. Since being converted in 1908, it has had six large lens fields that generate three pairs of beams with a light intensity of 2 million candelas per beam. The nominal range is 24.4 nautical miles (≈ 45 kilometers). The beacon is operated with a 400 watt metal halide lamp on a changing device.

The New Borkum Lighthouse is operated remotely by the Ems an der Knock ( Emden ) traffic control center.
