The Ems traffic center is part of the German-Dutch traffic safety system Ems and monitors shipping in the mouth of the Ems . It is subordinate to the Emden Waterways and Shipping Office and is one of nine German traffic centers . The traffic control center, which is constantly manned and equipped with the latest radar and communications technology, was put into operation in 1972 in the current building west of Emden an der Knock in East Frisia . The cooperation between the two countries was regulated in the 1980 radar agreement.

Systems, technology and buildings

The construction of the traffic control center took place in the years 1970–1972 as part of the construction of a radar chain with district radio for constant monitoring of shipping traffic in the Unterems. First the 55  m high light and radar tower Knock was erected directly next to the sluice and pumping station Knock , then the building for the actual traffic control center was built.

The traffic safety system includes the following unmanned outstations at the mouth of the Ems :

The technical equipment such as radar and radio relay systems of the outstations are remotely controlled and monitored via the traffic control center.

The Ems traffic control center works with the Atlas VTS 9730 traffic safety system . It was manufactured in Bremen at the end of the 1990s and is one of the most modern VTS systems (VTS = Vessel Traffic Service) in the world. The VTS system provides the employees of the traffic control center with color radar images with a stored nautical chart . Furthermore, it offers a very precise automatic target tracking of all detected radar targets and determines their exact position, course and speed. Radar images and radiotelephony can be saved via digital video and audio recordings and called up again when required.
