function
The lighthouse serves as a navigation aid in shipping and is at the same time a memorial for the marines who died in the First World War . The following inscription can be found on the tower: SPLENDI E RICORDA I CADUTI SUL MARE MCMXV - MCMXVIII ( lamp and remembrance of the fallen at sea 1915 - 1918 ).
Building
The lighthouse consists of a wide base that was built on the former Austrian fortress Kressich . The foundation is based on stone blocks from Istria and the Karst .
A bronze dome forms the end of the lighthouse, on which the 700 kg bronze statue Statua della Vittoria is located. The statue is the work of the sculptor Giovanni Mayer .
Under the statue of the marine at the front is the anchor of the destroyer Audace , who entered the port of Trieste on November 3, 1918 and brought the first Italian troops ashore in Trieste. The anchor was a gift from Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel to the city of Trieste.
history
As early as 1918, the city of Trieste planned to build a lighthouse on the hill of Gretta on the site of the former Kressich fortress . The project was entrusted to the Trieste architect Arduino Berlam (1880-1946), who began construction in February 1923. On May 24, 1927, the lighthouse was in the presence of King Victor Emmanuel III. inaugurated and from then on took over the function of the former Lanterna lighthouse , which is located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Trieste in Porto Vecchio . The lighthouse has been open to visitors since 1986.
