Voslapp is a district of the Lower Saxony city of Wilhelmshaven . As a model NS residential town for workers in the Kriegsmarine shipyard, it was built from 1938 by the specially founded housing association JADE on diked land on the west bank of the Jadebusen.

geography

When Voslapp was founded in 1938, the area became part of the city of Wilhelmshaven. In the north and east it borders on the districts of Voslapper Groden and Rustersieler Groden , in the west on Sengwarden and along the sleeping dike on Fedderwardergroden and in the south on Niedersachsendamm on Rustersiel .

history

The plans for 5,000 inhabitants go back to the development plans of the Reichsheimstättenamt Gau Weser-Ems, the building departments of the Reich Ministry of Labor (Karl Pfeiffer) and the High Command of the Navy (Walter Kelm) and the Oldenburg Ministry of Finance (Fritz Karl Schneider). The small settlement houses and “people's apartments” were designed by the JADE housing association (Willi Lübbers, Willy Schemm) and built from 1938 to 1941 and were intended to accommodate workers from the naval shipyard. The small settlement houses built according to the Reich Settlement Act of 1919 have spacious gardens that were previously mostly used for growing fruit and vegetables and for raising small cattle for self-sufficiency. It was not until the mid-1960s that the settlement was fully connected to Wilhelmshaven in terms of transport.

During the Second World War was in Voslapp the "Heavy anti-aircraft battery Geniusbank" the Navy - Flak - Division 2nd Marine flak 212 of the regiment set up. During the war, the commercial wing was built in the middle of the settlement. Voslapp remained almost undestroyed during the war, but duds were regularly found in the nearby fields until the 1990s .

In the 1970s, the upstream Voslapper Groden Industrie was established, in particular the Voslapp chemical plant and the Wilhelmshaven refinery . Voslapper Groden is formally a separate district, even if industrial companies such as INEOS specify “Voslapp” as their location. Construction of the nearby JadeWeserPort began in spring 2008 and was officially put into operation on September 21, 2012.

Infrastructure

Living

With a high proportion of single-family houses, Voslapp is now a preferred residential area for families. The urban outskirts between the dike and the rural surroundings give the district a high recreational value. The district enables quiet living, with good shopping opportunities in the center as well as on the southern periphery.

Little reminds of the early years of Voslapp, accompanied by Nazi propaganda, and the promises made by the NSDAP and the navy shipyard. “Every German person his little house in the country”, that was the ideology of the Gaumusteriedlungen. In Voslapp, unskilled arms workers should settle down. However, the traffic connections to Wilhelmshaven, about eight kilometers away, were poor. Major projects such as the neighboring water airport and forest plantings have been discontinued. Typical Nazi “community buildings” such as HJ homes, parade grounds and NSDAP community houses were planned, but not completed except for the schools.

traffic

This district is well connected in terms of transport via the A 29 motorway and bus lines operated by Stadtwerke-Verkehrsgesellschaft Wilhelmshaven .

Religions

In Voslapp you can find:

The Roman Catholic Church and the New Apostolic Church are no longer represented in Voslapp since changes in the structure of their local parish structures. While the church building of the former New Apostolic congregation Wilhelmshaven-Nord in Fedderwarder Straße was profaned and handed over to private hands, the church building in Hunrichstraße of the former Roman Catholic branch congregation of Stella Maris is used by the Coptic Orthodox congregation Wilhelmshaven.

Residents

development

On December 31, 2007, Voslapp had 3541 inhabitants with an unemployment rate of 5.2%. In the following ten years, the population decreased by 6%. Compared to the city as a whole, the decline in population was somewhat more moderate. Voslapp experienced a low point in the number of inhabitants in 2015: only 3,205 people still live in the district. In the following years the number increased slightly. In 2017, 3248 Voslappers were counted.

Share of foreigners and migrants

The proportion of foreigners in 2007 was 1.6%. Ten years later (2017) the proportion of foreigners had risen to 2.3%, which is well below the Wilhelmshaven average of 9.6%. The proportion of migrants is 8.8%, compared to an urban average of 21.8%.

colonization

With the exception of the multi-storey development on Flutstrasse, Kniprodestrasse and Konstruodenstrasse, the image of the district is determined by single-family houses - mostly residential buildings - with larger than average gardens. The district is framed in the east by the old Voslapper sea dike and in the west by the Kniphauser dike. Voslapp has an area of 189.3 hectares. The population density per hectare was 18.8 in 2007. Voslapp thus had roughly the same density as the districts of Schaar and Neuengroden .

Age

30.1% of the Voslappers are 65 years and older. This means that Voslapp has a higher value than the calculated average of all districts of 25.7%. On the other hand, the district with a share of minors of 14.2% achieved a slightly above-average value in the district comparison. The average age is correspondingly high at 48.9 years compared to the urban average of 46.1 years.

Population movement

As in the entire city of Wilhelmshaven, it is noticeable that the number of deaths is higher than that of births. In 2017, 41 Voslappers died, while 23 new ones were born. The arrivals and departures are almost balanced: There were only 6 more departures than immigrants.

tourism

The Genius bench around the Genius Beach was for years one of the central tourist spots for Voslappers, Wilhelmshaven residents and holidaymakers and the only sandy beach in Wilhelmshaven. The official bathing operation as well as the operation of the adjoining campsite was stopped at the end of the 2004 season due to the upcoming construction of the JadeWeserPort . However, until the 2007 season, the beach was still unofficially open. Construction of the JadeWeserPort began here in spring 2008. The next larger beach is now in Hooksiel, about seven kilometers away .

The top light of the leading light line Voslapp is located in the nearby Rüstersieler Groden , which is 64.6  m above sea level. NN is the third highest fire bearer in Germany, as well as an information pavilion on the JadeWeserPort.
