From 1960 to 1963 he learned the mason trade in Soest and worked as a draftsman. From 1963 he studied architecture at the Höxter State Engineering School and graduated as an engineer in 1966. Then he studied a. a. with the architect Willy Kreuer , the urban planner Peter Koller and the architectural historian Julius Posener at the Technical University of Berlin Architecture and Urban Planning . In 1968 he took part in Aktion 507 there, which dealt with the criticism of modern urban planning and the rediscovery of the old districts. His reconstruction of the planning and construction process in Berlin's Gropiusstadt became known in 1971. He worked as a Dipl.-Ing. (TU) in architectural offices and construction departments in Berlin, u. a. in the Kreuzberg urban redevelopment. From 1973 to 2002 he was head of the Wilhelmshaven structural engineering department. In addition to municipal construction tasks, the preservation and continued use of historically significant shipyard workers' settlements, beach facilities, engineering structures, urban districts and the edge of the port were among his outstanding initiatives. With the cultural center Pumpwerk (1975–76) he designed and built the first socio-cultural center in Lower Saxony. This was followed by the Ruscherei citizens' meeting place (1980-81), the Spritzenhaus Fedderwarden youth center (1984), the Werftwasserturm (from 2001), etc. In addition, he devoted himself to his doctorate (summa cum laude), his habilitation (teaching license: "German building history of the 19th and 20th century "), the architectural history research of German buildings in China (Tsingtau) and numerous publications. His dissertation The City of 500,000, Wilhelmshavens Architecture and Urban Planning in the Service of the Nazi System was exemplary for the scientific analysis of Nazi architecture.
