Location of Heppens in the city of Wilhelmshaven

Heppens is considered the real nucleus of the city of Wilhelmshaven and is today the most populous and oldest part of the city. It consists of the districts of the island area , Alt-Heppens , Tonndeich , Heppenser dike , educators district and residential area .

history

Heppens was first mentioned as a parish in connection with the year 1495. Like the neighboring parish Neuende, it belonged to the Jever rule . After the death of Maria von Jever in 1575, the claims to power fell to the county of Oldenburg .

With the Jade Treaty of July 20, 1853, the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg sold parts of the southeastern municipality of Heppens to Prussia . The 313 hectare area on the Jade Bay was to serve as a base for the Prussian Navy . On November 23, 1854, the area was given the name Royal Prussian Jade Area to Prince Adalbert of Prussia , Admiral of the Prussian Navy. The Prussian city of Wilhelmshaven is founded on June 17, 1869.

The population in the Jade region increased steadily due to the port construction measures. Since the demand for living space in the Prussian Wilhelmshaven could not be satisfied quickly enough, ever larger parts of the population settled in the surrounding communities of Heppens and Neuende, which belong to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of the municipality of Heppens had increased so much that Oldenburg granted it the status of a 2nd class town on October 1, 1907. Emil Lueken became the first mayor of the new city.

In 1911 it was merged with the communities of Bant and Neuende to form the town of Rüstringen , which in turn merged with the town of Wilhelmshaven in 1937.
