Siebethsburg is a district of Wilhelmshaven . The name comes from the medieval Sibetsburg , which was located in the district and of which only the former castle grounds with castle hill and moat have been preserved.

location

The district borders in the north on tom-Brok-Strasse on the district of Rüstringer Stadtpark , in the east on Berliner Strasse on Heppens , in the south on Bismarckstrasse on city center and Bant , in the west on Friedrich-Paffrath-Strasse on Neuende .

history

The Siebethsburg district emerged from the area around the medieval Sibetsburg. This castle of chief Edo Wiemken the Elder and von Sibet was built in 1383, besieged in 1433 by the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and destroyed in 1435 by the Hanseatic city of Bremen . The castle hill, which is around five meters high and surrounded by double walls and moats, has remained to this day.

Starting in 1904, a settlement of uniformly designed residential buildings for the shipyard workers of the Imperial Shipyard was built around the Sibetsburg . Today they are under monument protection, the hallmarks are whitewashed walls and green window frames. This settlement initially belonged to the town of Rüstringen , which was not incorporated into Wilhelmshaven until 1937. The settlement became the Siebethsburg district. Due to the large proportion of garden areas, the district is also known as the "Garden City of Siebethsburg".
