Location of Schaar in the city of Wilhelmshaven

Schaar is a district of the independent city of Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony . The district includes the districts of Schaar, Maadetal-Nord , Maadetal-Mitte , Schaardeich and Potenburg.

location

The district of Schaar extends along the medieval dykes of the Schaar row and the Schaardeich. The original center of the Wurtensiedlung was on the Schaarmarkt.

The district of Schaar extends along the Mittelalt. Schaarzeile and Schaardeich dykes. Today, new residential areas with single-family houses characterize Schaar.

Origin of name

The name derives from the term Schaar droves , schore , shaved or schare and means slanted or sloping . It refers to an area that lies directly on the water without foreland .

history

Schaar is first mentioned in a document dated February 17, 1416 as Up der Schore . The Wurtensiedlung in the parish of Neuende was probably built in the course of land reclamation and dike measures on the southern bank of Maade Bay . In the Middle Ages, Schaar developed into a port conveniently located on the Maade fairway . The Frisian chiefs from Rüstringen , who live in the nearby Sibetsburg , used the harbor and are said to have given refuge to the privateers of the Vitalienbrüder .

The village emerged from a main valley located 4.30 meters above sea level and several smaller secondary valleys. The main sausage was around 250 meters long and 130 meters wide. At the end of the 19th century, the development expanded from here in the direction of the church row, Aldenburg and Ebkerige. The decisive factor was the arrival of Wilhelmshaven shipyard workers from the Imperial Navy Shipyard and the construction of Fort Schaar , a fortification that was built in 1870/1871 to defend the Jade region and the Prussian naval port.

From 1996 several new residential areas were built in the Schaar district. The development was carried out as part of a higher-level project that was given the working title of “West residential city” by the city administration. The aim of the project was to build on the area north of the federal highway 210 between the Europaviertel and the Maade , which was previously used for agriculture . The new residential areas Maadetal-Nord , Maadetal-Mitte , Schaardeich and Potenburg are officially part of the Schaar district as districts.

The construction activity has led to the influx of young families, so that Schaar of the Wilhelmshaven districts (as of 2016) has the lowest average age (40.9 years, average age 46.3) and the highest proportion of households with children (32.1% , Average 15.2%).

Residents

development

From 1997 to December 31, 2007, the population increased from 974 to 2422. It can be said continuously that the population has decreased slightly from year to year (as of 2017). The reason for the enormous increase is that large areas of the district have been designated as building land in recent years. New residential areas emerged in which families with small children in particular could realize their dream of owning a home.

Share of foreigners and migrants

The proportion of foreigners in Schaar is 3.1% with a Wilhelmshaven average of 9.6%. The proportion of migrants is 29.5% with an urban average of 21.8%.

colonization

Schaar has an area of 127.8 hectares. The population density is 19 inhabitants per hectare, with the value being almost twice as high in the densely built-up districts of Maadetal- Mitte and Maadetal-Nord (as of 2007).

Age

With an average age of 42.5 years, Schaar has the youngest population in the entire city area. This is because the 45 to 55 year olds are most represented in this area. The minors also raise the average age, as they make up 18.2% of the population.

marital status

Most of the married couples (55.4%) live in Schaar, which is above the city average. The average age also suggests a high number of households with children: 28.1% of residents have one or more children. The 10 to 14 year-olds make up the largest share.

Population movement

In 2007 the Schaar district recorded a birth surplus of 2 inhabitants. 15 births were compared to 13 deaths. In 2017, however, this was almost balanced: 15 births compared to 16 deaths. The situation is similar with immigration and emigration: In 2017, there were 184 immigrants compared to 186 emigrations, which means a loss of 2 residents.
