  • The federal highway 210 (abbreviation: B 210 ) is a federal highway in Germany . It leads from Emden via Aurich , Wittmund and Jever to Wilhelmshaven and, along with the A 28, is the most important east-west connection on the East Frisian peninsula . Since the B 210 runs significantly further north than the A 28, it is the most important connection to the motorway network for many cities and municipalities between Emden (connection to the A 31 ) and Wilhelmshaven (connection to the A 29 ).

    history

    origin

In East Frisia, the construction of paved roads began late. One reason was the boggy ground, which made it difficult to create. In earlier centuries the boat was the more important mode of transport between Emden and Aurich. For this purpose, the trek was created, which today forms the course of the Ems-Jade Canal in parts . The first stone road ever built in East Frisia was the road from Aurich to Leer between 1834 and 1840. The construction of a road from Emden to Aurich via Georgsheil , which can be seen as the forerunner of today's route, was completed in 1845, including one Branch from Georgsheil to the north . In 1869 the gap to Wittmund was closed.

    Previous routes and names

By 1937 the highway between Aurich and was Sande to Reichsstraße explained and performed as a Reichsstrasse 210th The western section between Emden and Georgsheil was part of Reichsstraße 70 , the subsequent section between Georgsheil and Aurich belonged to Reichsstraße 72 . After the construction of the A 29 and A 31 motorways, the B 210 was extended on the route of the former federal highways 69 and 70 to Emden and Wilhelmshaven.

    Replacements

Bypass roads have been in operation around Wittmund since around 1980, around Jever since around 2000 and around Schortens since December 2012.

    Schortens bypass

The center of the city Schortens should be relieved by a bypass road linking the already completed bypass of Jever directly with the Wilhelmshavener Kreuz on the A 29 connects. The planned route (as of 2012) is around 5.6 kilometers long. The planning approval decision was issued in 2003. Lawsuits against the project were dismissed. The investment costs are given at around 42 million euros. The inclusion in the federal government's economic stimulus package secured the financing and the short-term implementation of the construction project. The groundbreaking took place on July 7, 2009. The official traffic release took place on December 7, 2012.

    course

B 210 east of the A 29 (first from left to right under the bridge, then turn left towards Wilhelmshaven)

The first section of the B 210 is the Ost Autobahn slip road in Emden. It begins on Petkumer Strasse , the main road to the east of Emden, and ends at the Emden-Ost junction of the A31. This section has two lanes, but with hard shoulder on both sides. The route then leads as the A 31 to the Emden-Mitte junction, where the B 210 continues north. The B 210 has been expanded to four lanes up to the border with the Hinte community ( Auricher Straße ), as it forms the main arterial road from Emden in a northerly direction and is particularly heavily used at peak times (e.g. when changing shifts at the Volkswagen plant in Emden ). Immediately at the Emden-Mitte junction and on the B 210 there is also a larger industrial park with a large number of supermarkets and specialist stores.

The B 210 then continues in a north-northeast direction. The Hinteraner district of Suurhusen was relieved in the 1990s by a bypass. Past Loppersum , the main road continues over the area of the municipality of Südbrookmerland and meets in the Georgsheil district with the B 72 from Norddeich , which follows it as Emder Straße to the city of Aurich . Between Georgsheil and the horse market crossing in Aurich, the B 210 and B 72 run along the same route. The Abelitz – Aurich railway runs parallel to the B 210 between Georgsheil and the Aurich district of Extum , at a distance of just a few meters. Especially for the Moordorf district in southern Brookmerland , this means a narrow through-road. The section between Moordorf and Aurich is one of the busiest sections of federal roads in East Frisia. From the Aurich district of Extum, the B 210 runs four lanes through the city. At the horse market junction in Aurich, the busiest junction in East Friesland, the B 72 leaves the common route and bends south, while the B 210 continues in an east-northeast direction. Up to the Aurich district of Sandhorst , the B 210 retains its four-lane structure as Esenser Straße . There a state road bends in a northerly direction, which opens up the north industrial area in Aurich, where the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon also produces. The B 210 is therefore the most important route for Enercon to the port of Emden , where the systems are shipped for export. Many heavy loads (of generators or rotors) are carried out in the evening and night, when the traffic volume is lower. The B 210 is to be relieved in the future by increased transports on the aforementioned railway line.

The federal road continues through the northeast of the city of Aurich in the direction of Wittmund , which has a bypass. Here the B 461 branches off in the direction of the Wittmund district of Harlesiel . At the city limits of Jever , the B 210 is now becoming an intersection-free motor road in the "2-to-1" system, in which the directions of travel alternate in two lanes for around 1.5 km, while the opposite direction has only one lane. In this form, the B 210 has bypassed Jever since 2000 and Schortens since 2012 . Before that, the main road ran through the inner cities of Jever and Schortens, which had led to traffic jams, especially during the summer months, as vacationers had to drive through the narrow, two-lane town through on the way to the coast.

The B 210 during its new construction in 2012 west of the A 29 in Schortens

From the Schortens exit, the federal road becomes four-lane with structurally separate lanes and crosses the A 29 at the Wilhelmshavener junction . It continues in two lanes to Wilhelmshaven, where, as Bismarckstrasse, it is one of the most important inner-city east-west connections. Before that, the Northwest Technology Center in the Schortens district of Roffhausen was connected. This is the former factory of the office machine manufacturer Olympia , on which a large number of companies with a total of four-digit number of employees have settled. At the intersection with Hooksieler Landstrasse, which leads in the north of Wilhelmshaven, and Peterstrasse , which is the second important east-west connection between Wilhelmshaven's city center, there is also a brisk volume of traffic. The federal road ends at the intersection with Gökerstrasse in the north of Wilhelmshaven city center near the train station. The Bismarck road itself continues towards the east to the harbor, but as an urban street.

    Local authorities

The B 210 successively crosses the city of Emden, the district of Aurich , the district of Wittmund and the district of Friesland and ends in Wilhelmshaven. It crosses five of the six districts and independent cities on the East Frisian peninsula, only not the district of Leer . In its course of around 86 km, only eight different communities are crossed (Emden, Hinte, Südbrookmerland, Aurich, Wittmund, Jever, Schortens and Wilhelmshaven).

    Waters crossed

Since East Friesland has countless smaller drainage ditches, the number of bodies of water crossed can hardly be counted precisely. The larger bodies of water crossed in Emden include the Stadtgraben, the connecting canal, the Borssumer Canal and the Fehntjer Tief , which cross below the B 210 (elevated there). In the section on which the B 210 continues as A 31, the Ems-Jade Canal and the Treckfahrtstief are crossed. To the north of Loppersum, the main road crosses the Knockster Tief , which is one of the two connections between Emden and the Great Sea . The Marscher Tief, which connects the Great Sea with canals of the Brookmerland, is crossed near Abelitz. At Moordorf the ring canal is crossed, in Aurich-Extum the Sandhorster Ehe. Both are important watercourses for draining the low-lying areas.

The Harle flows through in Wittmund under the B 210, in Jever the Tettenser Tief and the Hooksieler Tief. The Maade is crossed in Wilhelmshaven .

Only in Emden were higher bridges built to allow larger boats or barges to cross under the main road. The other waters are crossed without building bridges. At most, embankments were made to increase the clearance for smaller boats. However, the crossing is only possible with boats with low superstructures.

    Traffic density

Two sections of the B 210 are among the three busiest sections of federal roads in East Frisia. This is the section at the western entrance to Aurich in the Extum district , where almost 28,000 vehicles are counted every day, including an average of 971 trucks. The Auricher Straße in Emden between the Mitte motorway junction and the northern city limits is used by almost 23,100 vehicles every day, including 785 trucks. The B 210 is the main access road to Aurich and Emden for people from the Emden / Aurich / North triangle.

The narrow town through Moordorf is used by a good 17,700 vehicles every day. However, a not insignificant proportion of this is destination and source traffic; Moordorf is the central shopping area in the municipality of Südbrookmerland. After the B 210 leaves the common route with the B 72 at the horse market junction in Aurich, the busiest junction in East Friesland, it continues as Esenser Straße in a north-easterly direction. This section between the city center and the Sandhorst district is also used by more than 20,000 vehicles every day (a good 20,700). It represents the connection between the northern industrial area in Aurich and the B 72 leading to the south and (via the B 210) to the port of Emden.

The sections of the B 210 between Aurich-Sandhorst and Wittmund are much less busy. The situation is different in the district of Friesland, where the B 210 is the most important connection to the A 29, and in Wilhelmshaven, where it is one of the three connections to the A 29 junctions.

    Economical meaning

After the A 28, the B 210 is the second most important east-west connection on the East Frisian peninsula. However, it runs much more northerly than the autobahn, making it the shortest connection between the port cities of Emden and Wilhelmshaven, in which, in addition to port economic activity, industrial companies are also an important economic factor. A significant part of the commuter flows to the two cities mentioned thus leads via the B 210. The B 210 is the most important connection between Emden and large parts of the Aurich district. The majority of commuters to Emden come from there, for example to the VW plant there , but also to the port operations. For large parts of the districts of Wittmund and Friesland (especially the cities of Jever and Schortens) the B 210 is the "gateway" to Wilhelmshaven.

Since Aurich also has a significant industrial base due to the rise of the wind turbine manufacturer Enercon and has also always been a major authority location, commuters also lead to the district town of the Aurich district. The B 210 is also the most important road connection between the Enercon plant and the port of Emden, where wind turbines are shipped for export.

The B 210 is also of great importance for tourism on the coast. The shortest connection between the A 31 in Emden and Norddeich, the largest seaside resort in East Friesland and the ferry port to Norderney and Juist , leads first to Georgsheil via the B 210 and then via the B 72. Many of the coastal resorts and ferry ports in the districts of Wittmund and Friesland are connected via the A 29 and then via the B 210, including Harlesiel (ferry to Wangerooge ), Neuharlingersiel (ferry to Spiekeroog ) and Bensersiel (ferry to Langeoog ).

Changes in the Aurich / Ihlow / Südbrookmerland area

    B 70, B 72 and B 210 plan diagram

In this section the B 72 runs parallel to the B 210. The following changes are planned in this area:

    • South bypass of the B 72 and north bypass of the B 210 for Aurich. Together, these bypasses form a south-west-north three-quarter ring around the city, which connects the three incoming and outgoing branches of both federal highways.
    • Südbrookmerland bypass: Presumably this is combined with the Aurich bypass. There would then be no relapse on the old route between these two places. In the proposed variants, the bypass at the Georgsheil traffic junction will revert to the current road layout.
    • Connection to the A 31 : The above combined bypass will also have a powerful direct connection to the A 31 to the Riepe junction.

The 2 + 1 system is planned for the section from the A 31 to the entrance to the Enercon plant on the B 210 in northern Aurich . The connections to the existing road network are largely made with motorway-like junctions. The overall project is being re-run at the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport under the working title of Bundesstraße 210 .

The expansion plans are meeting with resistance from the population in the participating municipalities, especially in Ihlow. The Ihlower local council had spoken out against the project in July 2011 with a large majority.

Bypassing the Emden district of Friesland

In order to relieve the Emden district (colony) Friesland from the considerable heavy goods traffic from the eastern port areas to the A 31, a bypass road as part of the B 210 is expected to be under construction until 2022. Clearing and soil replacement have largely been completed along the entire length. (As of April 2020).

The bypass is intended to bring traffic from this part of the port around the district directly to the existing Emden-Ost junction of the A31. In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, the 1.3-kilometer route, which was estimated to have construction costs of 11.8 million euros, was defined as an urgent requirement . The necessary planning approval procedure was initiated on August 6, 2009, the corresponding resolution was issued on January 24, 2012. The symbolic "first groundbreaking" ceremony took place on December 10, 2015. The estimated costs of 24 million euros at that time have increased to 46 million euros . (As of August 2019)

After these three projects have been carried out, there are or would be no longer any noticeably obstructive through-roads on the entire B 210.

    Attractions

The crooked church tower in Suurhusen

There are a number of sights for motorists along the route. Since several cities are now bypassed on bypasses, some of the sights directly on the street have now "disappeared" - for example in the old town of Jever.

The most outstanding sight on the first kilometers of the route is the Leaning Tower of Suurhusen , the steepest inclined church tower in the world. It can be clearly seen from the Suurhusen bypass - and its enormous overhang of more than two meters becomes apparent even when driving past.

In Aurich there are some architectural monuments along the way, such as the listed building of the Aurich train station .

In Wilhelmshaven, the federal road runs through the city as Bismarckstrasse. The Wilhelmshavener Kurpark and the "Berliner Platz" with the Airlift Monument are located on it .

    Viewpoints

Due to the flat terrain of the route, there are no viewpoints nearby.
