Abelitz (Südbrookmerland)

Since the municipal reform of July 1, 1972, the village of Abelitz has belonged to the district of Uthwerdum in the municipality of Südbrookmerland in the district of Aurich in East Frisia . The mayor is Jakobus Jakobs (SPD).

It is traversed by the river of the same name or deep Abelitz . Its name is interpreted as the tautological composition of the ancient Germanic word apa (= water) with the Frisian appellative last (= flowing water). The Abelitz-Moordorf Canal , which drains Südbrookmerland towards the Ems, is also of great importance .

A train station was built in Abelitz in 1906, which for a long time was an important transfer station in East Friesland from the Emsland line to the railway line to Aurich . Here through coaches were reassigned, which were directed to the East Frisian government capital Aurich , while the main train from Emden drove further north - Norddeich . For example, there were through cars between Aurich and Berlin .

The last passenger train stopped in 1967. Freight traffic continued until April 30, 1996. The station tracks now serve as a sideline for trains meeting each other on the single-track connection between Emden and the north. There is only a small depot with a signal box . The switch to the Aurich junction was renewed in 2006 and was used by construction trains for the project until the beginning of 2008 ( Abelitz – Aurich railway line # reactivation of the line ). On April 4, 2008, the railway line to the district town was officially reopened. From April 14, 2008, regular freight trains will run from the district town to Emden again. The main user of the connection is the Aurich wind turbine producer Enercon .

On April 5, 2008, the museum railway coastal railway Ostfriesland e. V. with its museum train as the first passenger train to operate the new route to Aurich for many years.
