length approx. 20 km

The Abelitz is about 20 km long river , the one in East Friesland also deep calls from Marienhafe to its confluence with the Old Greetsieler Sieltief . The name is interpreted as the tautological composition of the ancient Germanic word apa (= water) with the Frisian appellative last (= flowing water).

It is 20 kilometers long, up to 12 meters wide, up to 1.50 meters deep and can be navigated by boats with a draft of up to 1.20 meters at a maximum of 5 km / h. The banks of the Abelitz are often close to nature and overgrown with reeds . There are several tributaries that enclose small islands or run through wetlands . The river is very rich in fish and known as a good fishing area.

The bird life on and around the Abelitz is diverse. During the breeding season, water hikers and anglers are encouraged to behave carefully.

With Moordorf the Abelitz is connected through the Abelitz-Moordorf channel.
