The Alte Greetsieler Sieltief is a watercourse in the municipalities of Krummhörn , Hinte and Werdenum in the Aurich district in East Friesland . As with most of the lows in the region, it is a (largely) artificially created or developed body of water. As the name suggests, it is used to drain the region, which is only slightly above or partly below sea level, through a sluice , in this case the one in Greetsiel .

course

Map of the Emden / Hinte / Krummhörn region: The old Greetsieler Sieltief runs from Greetsiel (top left on the map) to Loppersum (middle right).

The old Greetsieler Sieltief branches off in the north of the village of Loppersum in the municipality of Hinte from the Knockster Tief and flows in a north-westerly direction through the district of the Hinteraner village of Canhusen . There it runs for a few hundred meters in a westerly direction and forms the border to the community of Werdenum . Near the former Aland monastery , it changes its direction to the north and south of the village of Werdenum to the west. Before the Krummhörner village of Grimersum it bends north and then flows around the named place in a westerly direction. In Eilsum it also forms an arc around the town to the north, and then flows in an approximately west-northwest direction to Greetsiel. In the Sielort, the Alte Greetsieler Sieltief, together with the New Greetsieler Sieltief, surrounds the historic town center and flows through a sluice into the Greetsieler Hafen, which drains via the Leyhörn reservoir built in the 1990s into the Außenems and thus the North Sea.

Backwaters

Near Abbingwehr flows to the Abbingwehrer low. In the Canhusen district, the old Greetsieler Sieltief takes on the Canhuser Tief, a short branch canal that connects the named village. At the border of the communities of Hinte and Werdenum, the Abelitz coming from Marienhafe flows into the valley. The Uttumer Tief branches off a little further to the west and flows towards this village, only to merge further northwest at Eilsum into the Alte Greetsieler Sieltief. To the south of Werdenum, a piercing - also officially called - forms another connection to the Abelitz. Immediately south of Werdenum branches off the Werdenumer Tief, which, as in the case of the Canhuser Tief, is a short branch canal. In Grimersum the Schoonorther Polderschloot, a larger drainage ditch, flows to the low. It is used to drain the Schoonorth polder, which was created after 1603 and covers several hundred hectares.

Traffic importance

For centuries, the natural depths and drainage channels that crisscross the Krummhörn in a dense network were the most important modes of transport. Not only the villages but also many farms were connected to the city of Emden and the port of Greetsiel via ditches and canals. The boat traffic with Emden was particularly important. Village boatmen took over the supply of goods from the city and delivered agricultural products in the opposite direction: “From the Sielhafenort, smaller ships, so-called Loog ships, transported the cargo to the inland and supplied the marsh villages (loog = village). The loog ships from the Krummhörn enlivened the canals of the city of Emden until the 20th century. "

Peat, which was mostly extracted in the East Frisian Fehnen , played an important role as heating material for the inhabitants of the Krummhörn for centuries . The peat ships brought the material on the East Frisian canal network to the Krummhörn villages. On their way back into the Fehnsiedlungen the Torfschiffer often took clay soil from the march and the manure of cattle with which they their home were dug fertilized land.

drainage

The Alte Greetsieler Sieltief is, along with the Neuer Greetsieler Sieltief and the Knockster Tief, one of the main receiving waters for large parts of southwestern East Frisia. Together with its tributaries, it drains part of the municipalities of Hinte , Krummhörn , Südbrookmerland and Samtgemeinde Brookmerland . The I. Drainage Association Emden , based in Pewsum , the main town of the Krummhörn, is responsible for the maintenance of the New Greetsieler Sieltiefs and its tributaries . Large parts of the association's area are below sea level , so that without sufficient drainage, those areas would be under water if there was continued rainfall .

tourism

The old Greetsieler Sieltief is no longer of any importance for the transport of goods. However, it is used by water sports enthusiasts (canoeists, boaters) in their spare time. However, there is no direct access to the Outer Ems in Greetsiel, as there is no lock there. Motorboats can only connect to the high seas via the sea locks in Emden. Canoeists, on the other hand, can move their vehicle to the port in Greetsiel on the Siel.
