The Leyhörn is a protected peninsula in the south of the Leybucht in the Lower Saxony municipality of Krummhörn in the Aurich district . The artificial headland was created until 1991 as part of coastal protection measures .

Plans for coastal protection from the 1960s originally envisaged a full dike in the Leybucht, with the dike line to be shortened from 16.5 to around eight kilometers. However, demands from nature conservation, drainage and the town of Greetsiel led to a change in plans. In September 1985, the plan approval application for the preservation of the largest possible open bay and for the construction of an estuary structure with a sluice as close as possible to the deep channel of the Norderley was approved.

In October 1985 the construction work began. In 1991 the artificial headland Leyhörn was completed. At the same time, the Leysiel barrage with lock was built and put into operation by September 1991. The new sluice is upstream of the two old sluices in Greetsiel, which accommodate the old and new Greetsieler sluice depth.

Part of the Leyhörn peninsula was designated as a nature reserve Leyhörn in December 1994 .
