Upgant-Schott is a municipality in the joint municipality of Brookmerland and is located in the Aurich district in East Frisia . The districts of Upgant-Schott are Mühlenloog, where the Upganter and Marienhafer windmills are located, as well as Ihlingswarf, Osterupgant and Kolhörn.

origin of the name

Upgant-Schott was mentioned for the first time as Cuppargent in 945 in the register of donations of the Fulda monastery . The name Upgant probably refers to a small river called Gant , about the course of which there are various speculations. It may have flowed from Siegelsum (a town incorporated in 1969) via the Bollandswater west of Schottjer Grode into the Abelitz , a tributary of the old Greetsieler Sieltiefs ; but it can also come from the high moor east of Upgant and be identical to today's Upganter Zugschloot . This is supported by the name Upgant (East Frisian: up de Gant , German: auf / über der Gant ). The name Schott is interpreted from the Low German scheten (German: throw ). The earth thrown out of a ditch lay like a kind of wall on the edge and was formerly called Schott .

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the community of Siegelsum was incorporated.
