Life

Reint de Boer went to school in Norden (East Friesland) and, after two years of internship, studied civil engineering from 1957 at the Leibniz University of Hanover (then Technical University), where he graduated in 1962 and then was assistant to Theodor Johannes Lehmann at the Institute for Building Mechanics. In 1966 he received his doctorate there ( A contribution to the theory of the elastic bending of strips with finite shape changes ). In 1970 he completed his habilitation in Hanover ( elastic-plastic shape changes of thin membrane shells ) and was then a private lecturer and from 1975 associate professor for building mechanics in Hanover. In 1968 he did a research stay at the TU Brno and in 1973 at the TU Vienna (with Heinz Parkus ). In 1975/76 he was on a research stay at the University of California, Berkeley (with Karl Pister , Paul M. Naghdi ). In 1977 he became a professor at the University of Essen , where the civil engineering department had just been established in 1974. He helped to build up the civil engineering course there and was temporarily dean of the department. In 2001 he retired. He was visiting professor at UCLA (1990/91) and at the University of California, San Diego (1994/95, 1999/2000).

He is known for the development of the theory of porous media (since the 1980s), such as those found in soil mechanics or in biological tissues. In addition, he dealt with the history of mechanics, for example with Karl von Terzaghi , about whose conflict with the Viennese professor Paul Fillunger he wrote a book. The book also deals with other aspects of Terzaghi's biography and the history of soil mechanics in the first half of the 20th century. De Boer conducted intensive source studies for the book.

In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart, both for his contributions to the theory of porous media and to the history of mechanics. In 1992 he gave lectures on the theory of porous media in China, where he was awarded an honorary professor ( Consultant Professor ) at the University of Chongqing .

Wolfgang Ehlers (University of Stuttgart) is one of his doctoral students.
