Henry Patrice Dillon (born November 28, 1850 or 1851 in San Francisco , † May 16, 1909 in Paris ) was a painter and lithographer from the United States of America who lived and worked in Paris.

Life

Henry (or Henri) Patrice Dillon was born in the French Consulate in San Francisco. His father William Guillaume Patrice Dillon was the consul of France, his mother's name was Jeanne Amica, b. Anderson. In the short term, the son also wanted to pursue a diplomatic career, but in the 1870s he made a different decision. He moved to Paris and in 1873 became a student in the studio of the painter Isidore Pils ; later he switched to Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran . Other teachers of Dillon were José Frappa , Alexandre Cabanel and Henri Lehmann .

With their help, Dillon was first admitted to the major annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris in 1876 ; further exhibition participations there are proven for 1890 and 1892. These successes also made people aware of him in his home country and in 1884 there was a successful retrospective at the National Academy of Design ( New York ).

In 1888 the Calmann Lévy publishing house in Paris published an edition of the Herminie by the author Alexandre Dumas , which was equipped as a special edition in an edition of 25 with 22 watercolors by Dillon. He participated in the world exhibition of 1900 with the lithograph La Claque .

Dillon, who created oil paintings in addition to lithographs , chose subjects such as coffee houses, circus, ballet and concert halls such as Toulouse-Lautrec and other contemporaries, but concentrated on the mysteriousness of his scenes and worked in particular with shadow effects. He became vice-president of the community of lithographers and in 1896 or 1898 also knight of the Legion of Honor.

Paul Jouve , with whose father Auguste Jouve Dillon was friends, learned lithography from him.

Henry Patrice Dillon, who was married to a woman named Pauline and had no children, died after a serious illness in No. 2 rue Ambroise Paré . In 2007 a - still incomplete - catalog of his works by Maryvonne Lépinoy-Guégan was published, and in 2009 his biography by the same author.
