Heinz Parkus
Heinz Parkus (born January 31, 1909 in Vienna ; † March 18, 1982 ibid) was an Austrian physicist and university professor at the Vienna University of Technology . He is well known among technicians to this day thanks to his widely used textbook Mechanics of Solid Bodies .
Parkus did not begin his scientific career until 1945, when he received the position of assistant in the field of strength engineering at what was then the Technical University in Vienna . He completed his habilitation in 1948 and went to the USA in 1952, where he was a professor at Michigan State University for three years . In 1955, the year of the Austrian State Treaty , the Technical University in Vienna appointed him full professor for mechanics , but at the faculty for mechanical engineering and electrical engineering.
Heinz Parkus was highly respected in professional circles and was the academic teacher of over 10,000 technology students. In spite of the difficult times, he made great contributions to research right from the start of his teaching activity in Vienna and wrote numerous publications.
These works include:
- Unsteady thermal stresses , 1959.
- Mechanics of solid bodies , Springer 1960 (2nd edition as early as 1966).
- Thermoelasticity , 1968.
- Random Processes in Mechanical Sciences , 1969.
- Magneto-Thermoelasticity , 1972.
- several publications and research projects on the physics of fluids and strength theory.
