Location of Harsweg in the city of Emden

Harsweg is a district of Emden , which at the end of June 2015 had around 1,000 inhabitants on an area of 1.76 km². The place was incorporated in 1945 and previously belonged to the north district (since 1932), before that to the Emden district . The name of the district is derived from Old Frisian and means horse path (hars = horse and white = path).

In the northernmost district of Emden there is an extensive commercial and industrial area. The Emden-Mitte junction of the A 31 is in Harsweg. The junction (serial number: 3) has a separate entrance and exit to the Emden airfield . The federal highway 210 ( Auricher Straße ) (here with four lanes) runs through the district from Emden to Wilhelmshaven . It forms the main arterial road from Emden to the north and is therefore one of the busiest sections of federal roads in East Friesland. The focus of the settlement is to the west of the main road and east of the parallel and now dismantled stretch of the Emden – Pewsum – Greetsiel circular railway , where Harsweg had a stopping point until operations were closed in May 1963. The Hinte-Harsweg stop was on the Rheine – Norddeich Mole railway line . The district is bordered to the west by Hinter Tief .

There is also a cemetery here, which - as was common in the past - was laid out on a small terp . The cemetery has meanwhile been expanded to include surrounding, ground-level land. There is a cemetery chapel on the terp, but it is no longer used as such. This probably dates from the 15th to the 16th century.

In the immediate vicinity of the cemetery there is an agricultural area (domain area).

history

During the war, Emden was the target of Allied bombers 80 times during the air war . The Wehrmacht soldiers entrusted with the air defense tried to prevent the enemy aircraft from targeting by fogging . This sometimes led to uncontrolled drops, so that the suburbs were also hit by individual bombs. Damage was also recorded in Harsweg.

Harsweg was incorporated into Emden on October 1, 1945. This process, however, was preceded by lengthy negotiations between the Lord Mayor of Emden, Georg Frickenstein, and the honorary mayor of the Harsweg community, Gretus Dirksen. As early as June 1945, Frickenstein had therefore decided to contact the mayors of Harsweg, Uphusen and Larrelt and to convince them of the necessity of incorporation. The city , which was badly damaged in World War II , barely had enough space to cope with all the rubble. In addition, the city limits (the towns of Wolthusen and Borssum, which were incorporated in 1928 ) were still closely aligned with the development. The Emden vegetable growers could no longer remain in the urban area, where every square meter of space was needed for rebuilding. In addition, in an application to the district president of August 9, 1945, Frickenstein referred to the fact that the suburbs would use both the schools and the Emden hospital (which had not been rebuilt at that time). However, the municipality of Harsweg initially rejected the incorporation, as did Larrelt and Uphusen, but gave up their resistance after the city had made extensive contractual concessions on the future development of Harsweg. This included securing the school site, renovating streets and houses, and connecting them to the city's infrastructure (gas, electricity, bus transport). The Accession Treaty was signed on September 22nd and came into force on October 1st, 1945.
