About this picture

Börßum is a municipality in the Oderwald municipality in the Wolfenbüttel district in southeast Lower Saxony , Germany . Börßum is the seat of the administration of the combined municipality Oderwald.

geography

The place is a few kilometers north of the Harz , north of Schladen , around eleven kilometers south of Wolfenbüttel and is not far south-east of the Oder Forest . Börßum lies on the eastern bank of the Oker and marks the beginning of the sub-natural area Börßum-Braunschweiger Oker Valley in the hill country of East Brunswick .

South of the village, the two arms of the Ilse , the Mühlen-Ilse and the Kanal-Ilse , come together from the Harz and have been flowing into the Oker in the municipality since the 1950s. From the east, the Hasenbeeke flowing from Hedeper borders the settlement to the south. In the past, the valleys of all three rivers were used for railway lines and were therefore the geographic boundary conditions for the Börßum junction.

Districts of the community are Börßum, Achim , Bornum, Kalme and Seinstedt .

history

Börßum already had many names: 1135 Borsne, 1310 Borssen, 1338 Borssem, 1422 Groß Borsem, 1581 Borsum, 1652 Börsumb, around 1770 Borsheim, 1765 Boersheim, from 1762 for the first time Börßum. On November 1, 2011, the municipality of Achim was incorporated into Börßum.

Börßum used to be a railway junction on the following routes:

Today only the Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg line is in operation. The Börßum – Salzgitter-Bad section of the former route to Kreiensen is still used sporadically by museum trains of the so-called Warnetalbahn , and the Oker Bridge is used by walkers.

The Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg line was the first German state railway line. Börßum's train station has been preserved in its historical appearance. Therefore it served several times as a backdrop for film productions such as Tadellöser and Wolff and The Miracle of Lengede . The building is no longer used for the railway. Most of the former ten tracks have now been dismantled. Tracks 1 and 2 are operated by DB AG, tracks 5, 6 and 32 are used by the Warnetalbahn.

For the development of the postal system, see: Wolfenbüttel-Harzburg postal route .

Incorporations

On November 1, 2011, the neighboring community of Achim was incorporated. This was enlarged on March 1, 1974 to include the former municipalities of Kalme and Seinstedt. Also on March 1, 1974, the Bornum municipality became a part of its neighboring municipality of Börßum.

religion

In Börßum there is a Protestant church, the parish belongs to the parish association Börßum-Achim-Bornum of the provost of Schöppenstedt.

In 1954 the Catholic Curatie Börßum was founded by the union of the two parish vicarages Hornburg and Semmenstedt . In 1959/60 the St. Bernward church was built . In 2011 the church was profaned , most recently it belonged to the parish of St. Petrus in Wolfenbüttel. Today the nearest Catholic church is in Heiningen, 2 km away .

coat of arms

Blazon : "Split by blue and gold with a ring decorated with three lilies in alternating colors."

The colors are those of the former Duchy of Braunschweig . The coat of arms goes back to a shield-shaped seal of Friedrich von Börßum from 1311, which is still present in the Wolfenbüttel State Archives. The ambiguity alludes to the former places Börßum and Klein Börßum and today to the localities Börßum and Bornum .

Economy and Infrastructure

Börßum offers a train station on the Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg railway line , a primary school (built in 1899, renovation 2002/03), two doctors, a pharmacy, a bar, restaurants and, since 2009, a snack bar. In addition, many sports activities (soccer, basketball, etc.) are offered.
