The Church of St. Johannis-Baptista was first mentioned in 1300. Dettum was already important in the late Middle Ages, as it was on a military road.

The early place owned a noble estate that belonged to the Aegidienkloster in Braunschweig and was released in 1542. Between Hachum and Dettum there was a place Honroth from which a noble family of the same name came.

From 1773 to 1797 Hermann Bräß lived as a Protestant pastor in Dettum; Here he founded the newspaper for cities, towns and villages in 1786 , which for the first time also contained letters to the editor . In 1800 Dettum hosted a Schriftsassenhof , a church with parish and Pfarrwitwenhaus that Opferei, three arable farms , eight Halbspännerhöfe , 32 Kothöfe and three Brink seat creating 385 inhabitants.

In 1843 Dettum received its own train station on the Wolfenbüttel – Oschersleben railway line, and with the construction of the sugar factory in 1871, the prosperity of the peasantry increased significantly. The sugar factory was shut down in 1953 and its activities were transferred to the share sugar factory in Schöppenstedt.
