Mende Nazer

Mende Nazer (born around 1980 in a village in the Nuba Mountains , Dschanub Kurdufan ) is a British writer and human rights activist of Sudanese origin. Her work is based on her past as a slave , she became known through her autobiography Slave . Her autobiography was made into a film for television with the help of the British Film Fund UK Film Council under the title I Am Slave (Eng. Title: I am Slave - Ich, die Sklavin ).

Life

Mende Nazer grew up in a simple family in a Nuba village in Sudan . When she was about 12 years old, militias raided the village, slaughtered adults and abducted children. Nazer was raped, sold to a slave trader and taken to the capital, Khartoum . A wealthy Arab family bought her and kept her as a house slave for around eight years. She was beaten and sexually abused. Eventually it was passed on from her mistress to her sister, who lived in London as the wife of a Sudanese diplomat. Mende Nazer's slave existence continued in the house of the diplomat she was brought to in 2000 with a false visa. In the same year she managed to escape with the help of other tribesmen. Her autobiography was written with the help of Damien Lewis , a British journalist and Sudan expert.

In October 2002, her application for asylum in Great Britain was denied. Due to the indignation of the media, the protests of many of her readers and the support of human rights organizations , her deportation could be averted, Mende Nazer was recognized as a refugee. She lives in London today.

In 2006 she became a British citizen and was able to visit her family again for the first time in the Nuba Mountains, where peace has reigned since the Bürgenstock Agreement .
