St. Bernward Church (2009)

The Sankt Bernward Church was the Catholic church in Börßum , a municipality in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony . Most recently she belonged to the parish of St. Petrus , based in Wolfenbüttel , in the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church, named after St. Bernward von Hildesheim , was located at 12 Oderblick Street (corner of Mühlenweg). Today the nearest Catholic church is in Heiningen, two kilometers away .

history

After Catholic refugees and expellees had settled in the area around Börßum, which had been evangelical since the Reformation , as a result of the Second World War , parish vicarages were initially founded in Hornburg and Semmenstedt .

In 1954 the Catholic Curatie Börßum was created through the merger of the two parish vicarages Hornburg and Semmenstedt. In 1959 the foundation stone for the St. Bernward Church was laid, and on April 10, 1960 it was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . Plans to build a community center on the opposite site (Mühlenweg 5) were not implemented. On November 1, 2006, the previously independent parish of St. Bernward , which at that time comprised around 500 members, was dissolved and joined the parish of St. Petrus in Wolfenbüttel.

On November 20, 2011, the church was profaned by Cathedral Chapter Adolf Pohner , and the church building was offered for sale. Since no buyer could be found for several years, the demolition of the church building and the construction of two detached single-family houses on the property were planned around 2016. Initially the former rectory was sold, and around 2018 the church building also found a buyer.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 105 meters above sea level , was designed by Josef Fehlig , designed as a nave church with a retracted entrance tower. The interior design was done by Franz Pauli , the stained glass windows he created went to the St. Ansgar daycare center in Wolfenbüttel (Waldenburger Straße), which opened in 2012 .
