Josef Fehlig
Josef Fehlig (born October 31, 1908 ; † September 8, 1980 in Hildesheim ) was a German architect specializing in church construction .
Fehlig entered the service of the Hildesheim diocese in 1930 , where he became head of the construction department with the title of senior building officer. He held this office until his retirement in 1978.
Fehlig's work during the church construction period from 1950 to 1975 was of decisive importance. After the number of Catholics in the North German diaspora had almost tripled due to the flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe , new parishes had emerged in many towns and villages who wanted their own place of worship. During this time, over 200 churches were built under Fehlig's leadership, 80 of which were built according to his own plans. Among these new buildings are prefabricated churches that were only planned for about three decades, only to be demolished or replaced by more representative buildings. In the cities and central locations, however, more complex and permanent churches were built.
All of the church buildings that were built under Fehlig's direction reflect the endeavor to create spiritual and artistically designed spaces with limited resources. After the council , the new assignment of the liturgical places, the central position of the altar in the assembled congregation, often also the image of the tent became the guiding principle.
Josef Fehlig received the Medal of Merit of the Diocese of Hildesheim and the papal order Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for his achievements . He was a knight of the Order of Gregory .
