history

The history of the Catholic parish in Thiede began in 1920 when the first Holy Mass was held in an inn on March 27th by a priest from the parish of St. Petrus in Wolfenbüttel , to which Thiede belonged at the time.

In 1926, the Hildesheim diocese acquired the former inspector's house of the Thiederhall potash plant , and Joseph Müller , chaplain of the St. Petrus parish, was given pastoral care in Thiede. At that time, Thiede had around 300 Catholic residents. On March 27, 1927 at the newly acquired building was St. George's Chapel benediziert .

In February 1938, construction began on the Steterburg settlement as a home for workers from the Reichswerke AG for ore mining and ironworks "Hermann Göring", founded in 1937 . On July 1, 1938, the Thiede Curate was established , and Thiede had its own Catholic priest from then on . From October 1939 until the ban by the Secret State Police in April 1942, regular Catholic services were held in the Steterburg settlement. First in the hall of the restaurant Zur Deutsche Eiche , soon also in a classroom in the school barracks on Hagenholz. The wish for his own wooden barracks for church services, for which a collection of signatures took place in the parish in autumn 1939, remained unfulfilled.

From 1945 Catholic services were held again in Steterburg, first from May in the gym, then from August in an emergency chapel set up for this purpose in the attic of the elementary school. In 1946, Redemptorists expelled from Silesia moved into the church house acquired in 1926, which from that year bore the name Joseph-Müller-Haus.

On April 5, 1953, the cornerstone of the St. Bernward-church was laid in the settlement Steterburg, and took place on 8 November of that year by Bishop John Bydolek their blessing . The tower originally planned in front of today's southern side entrance of the church was not realized for cost reasons. With the construction of the St. Bernward Church, the use of the emergency chapel in the elementary school also ended. On January 1, 1954, the parish (Kuratiegemeinde) St. Bernward was founded. In 1954/55 the construction of the neighboring Redemptorist monastery followed, and in 1957 a retreat house was inaugurated there (Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße 2-4). In 1959 the church was enriched with a tower with four bells . On January 1, 1962, the parish was elevated to a parish. 1969/70 the church was under the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council remodeled and on April 11, 1970 Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen consecrated . In 1976 a new organ was built to replace the previous electronic instrument. In 1982/83 a new Redemptorist monastery was built behind the church (Klosterweg 3), on April 5, 1983 the benediction of his house chapel took place.

On September 1, 1994, a pastoral care unit was founded with Heilig Geist in Hallendorf , which merged into a parish on November 1, 2006. In 1999 the St. Bernward kindergarten was built (Pappeldamm 111). In 2001 the retreat house was closed, later sold. On October 9, 2004, the St. Georg chapel was profaned and then converted into an apartment. Since July 1, 2007, the church has belonged to the then newly established Deanery Goslar – Salzgitter, previously it belonged to the Deanery Salzgitter, founded in 1952. In 2009 solar panels were installed on the roof of the church.

The interior offers seats for 272 visitors. The image on the back wall of the sanctuary shows Jesus Christ . The baptismal font and a statue of St. George , which comes from the secular St. George Chapel in Thiede, are located to the left and right of the chancel. A confessional is on the south wall of the church. 14 pictures of the Stations of the Cross also hang on the side walls .
