It belongs to the parish " St. Benno " with seat in Bad Lauterberg , in the deanery Nörten-Osterode, and is the highest church in the diocese of Hildesheim . The church named after St. Andrew the Apostle is located in Help-God-Pond-Weg 3.

history

In the 16th century the population in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation .

Around 1900 the few Catholics in Sankt Andreasberg were cared for from Herzberg and Bad Lauterberg . After the First World War , Catholics from the Rhineland came to Sankt Andreasberg because of the occupation of their homeland by France . In 1920 there was already a Catholic service in the Schützenhaus.

At the end of July 1927 the groundbreaking ceremony for the St. Bernward Chapel, built by the parish in Bad Lauterberg , took place in Sankt Andreasberg , and it was inaugurated on October 16, 1927. It was named after Bernward von Hildesheim , was located at Herrenstrasse 12 (corner of Faktoreigasse) and was the highest church in the Hildesheim diocese when it was built. From 1931 to 1934, the priest Joseph Müller , who was executed in the Brandenburg-Görden prison in 1944, was a pastor in Bad Lauterberg and also responsible for pastoral care at the St. Bernward Chapel.

After 1945 the chapel had become too small for the increased number of people attending church services, and its property offered no opportunity for a sufficiently large new building. This is why today's St. Andrew's Church was built on the western edge of the spa park. Her consecration took place on October 22, 1967 . Before that, an independent parish ( Kuratiegemeinde ) had been set up in St. Andreasberg on May 1, 1967 . The St. Bernward Chapel was profaned , sold and converted into a restaurant in 1985 . The new owner opened a restaurant in her in 1987 with a historic ambience, called "Zur kleine Kapelle". Since then, changing restaurateurs have been represented in the chapel. The house has had a new name since June 4, 2017, because on that day a Veggie Plus Restaurant - Health & Culture Café was opened at this location, which is now called "The Little Chapel" and has been back since that day is a “meeting place”.

Since March 1, 2004, St. Andrew's Church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Nörten-Osterode, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Osterode. Since September 1st 2010 the church belongs to the parish “St. Benno ”in Bad Lauterberg, the parish“ St. Andreas “was canceled in this context.

Architecture and equipment

The church, about 610 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , with a free-standing bell tower crowned with a cross. The interior of the church includes statues of St. Andrew, the patron saint of the church, and Mary , mother of Jesus .

The previous chapel from 1927, sometimes also called the church , was a nave building with a gable roof , a cross-crowned roof turret and a simple interior. The timber structure, which is now a listed building, had a small canopy over the entrance door. A crucifixion group dominated the sanctuary .
