St. Benno's Church

The Church of St. Benno is the Catholic church in Bad Lauterberg im Harz , a town in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony . The church, named after St. Benno von Meißen , is located at Kirchberg 1-3 , and is a parish church in the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

history

In the 16th century the population in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation .

In 1903 the first Catholic church building association was founded in Bad Lauterberg, and it acquired two properties on the Kirchberg. The Catholics in Bad Lauterberg then belonged to the parish in Herzberg am Harz .

In 1920 the Catholic Church bought a building complex that previously housed the alumni "Haus Bartelsruh" and the Hildaschule ( secondary school for girls ). In the same year Pastor Voss held the first Catholic service there. In this building, which later became the St. Benno monastery, a Catholic chapel and a communication facility were initially set up. Catholic services were held there until the inauguration of St. Benno's Church. In 1931 or 1932, the priest Joseph Müller in Bad Lauterberg , who was executed in 1944 in the Brandenburg-Görden prison , got his first pastor's position, and he took up his apartment in the St. Benno monastery. In 1934 Pastor Müller was transferred to the St. Bonifatius Church in Süpplingen , and the church building association was dissolved due to political pressure. The parish home of the St. Benno parish was later named after Müller. On August 19, 1943, the St. Benno monastery was confiscated by the Nazi rulers.

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Bad Lauterberg also increased due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . On August 1, 1956, an independent parish was established in Bad Lauterberg, to which around 1700 Catholics belonged at the time.

In 1961, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the St. Benno's Church, and was followed on April 28, 1963 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen her consecration . In 1963 the chapel in the St. Benno monastery, no longer needed by the parish, was converted into a dining room. On October 1, 1965, the parish was elevated to a parish .

Since March 1, 2004, the St. Benno Church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Nörten-Osterode, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Osterode. Since September 1, 2010, the Catholic churches of St. Josef in Bad Sachsa , the Holy Family in Braunlage , St. Andreas in Sankt Andreasberg and the Holy Cross in Walkenried belong to the parish of St. Benno.

The relief in front of the main entrance depicts the twelve gates of the heavenly Jerusalem , the depiction on the back wall behind the altar depicts the mercy seat . The Way of the Cross is the work of the sculptor Josef Hauke . The organ was built in 1968 and expanded in 1975.

St. Benno pen

The St.-Benno-Stift Kneipp sanatorium, located on the corner of Kummelstrasse and Lönsweg, was set up in the building of a former communication center. On 19 December 1965, took place Blessing of the chapel with the patron saint "Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians ". After almost 90 years of existence, the “Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vinzenz von Paul in Hildesheim ”, the sanatorium was closed at the beginning of 2010. The decreasing number of religious sisters, the increased operating costs and, due to various reforms in the health system, the decreasing occupancy of the house led to the closure.

In the same year the house was taken over by the Catholic order Missionare Identes in order to use it for events of the order. For this purpose, the “Education and Recreation Center St. Benno GmbH” was founded in June 2010 to operate the house as “Haus St. Benno”. In 2014 the house was offered for rent or sale.
