The Holy Family Church is the Catholic Church in Braunlage , a town in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony . It belongs to the parish " St. Benno " based in Bad Lauterberg , in the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after the Holy Family is located at Von-Langen-Straße 8.

history

In the 16th century, with the introduction of the Reformation , the population in the Harz region embraced the Evangelical Lutheran faith. In 1602, the first church to be built in Braunlage was an Evangelical Lutheran church, which was later replaced by new buildings.

In 1937 the inauguration of the first Catholic church "To the Holy Family" took place in Braunlage, after Holy Masses had already been celebrated in cellars, sheds and gyms .

After the Second World War , Braunlage's population almost doubled due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons . The number of spa and vacation guests also increased. Since the previous church had become too small, construction of the current church began in 1963. On April 1, 1956, a Catholic parish was established in Braunlage. On March 28, 1965, took place the consecration of the church by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . It was built next to the previous church. The parish was raised to a parish for the consecration .

Since January 1, 2007, the church has belonged to the Nörten-Osterode deanery, previously it was affiliated to the Goslar deanery. In 2008 the branch churchHeilig Geist ” in Hohegeiß was profaned . Since September 1st 2010 the church belongs to the parish “St. Benno ”in Bad Lauterberg, the parish“ Holy Family ”was canceled in this context.

The church hit the headlines in 2012 after the 48-year-old sexton Elke C. was found dead in the basement of the church on November 17, 2012 . She was shot with a rifle after a service in the sacristy . In August 2013, her husband was convicted as a perpetrator.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 588 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by the Hildesheim architect Sommer. The pointed, cross-crowned tower is located above the chancel, its shape is reminiscent of a spruce , as can be found in the city's coat of arms . There is a three-part bell in the bell chamber.

Another catholic church belonging to Braunlage is the chapel “St. Maria From the refreshing spring ”. It is located at the “Haus Waldmühle” mother and child clinic, around two kilometers outside of the city center, near federal highway 27 in the direction of Bad Lauterberg.
