Holy Cross Church

The Heilig Kreuz Church is the Catholic church in Walkenried , a municipality in the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony . It belongs to the parish " St. Benno " with its seat in Bad Lauterberg , and is the southeastern church in the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after the cross of Jesus is located on Am Geiersberg 7 (corner of Hoher Weg). Its catchment area, which also includes the villages of Wieda and Zorge , today (as of 2010) includes around 400 Catholics.

history

In the 16th century the population in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation . In 1546 the monks of the Cistercian monastery of Walkenried converted to Protestantism .

Chapter House (2006)

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Walkenried increased significantly due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . A Catholic parish was formed, to which the Catholics in Wieda and Zorge also belonged. Until the Holy Cross Church was built, she held her services in the chapter house of the former monastery, which also serves as a place of worship for the Protestant parish Walkenried.

On April 1, 1960, the parish (was Kuratiegemeinde ) Walkenried established and followed on April 3 in 1960 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen the consecration of the newly built Holy Cross Church. At that time it was only a little over two kilometers from the inner-German border .

Since March 1, 2004, the Holy Cross Church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Nörten-Osterode, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Osterode. On August 1, 2004, the parish "Heilig Kreuz" was dissolved and the parish " St. Josef " in Bad Sachsa became the new parish "St. Josef, Bad Sachsa and Walkenried ”merged. Since September 1, 2010 the Holy Cross Church has belonged to the parish “St. Benno "in Bad Lauterberg, the parish" St. Josef, Bad Sachsa and Walkenried ”was canceled in this context. In 2011, a census showed that of the 2337 residents of Walkenried, 234 were members of the Catholic Church.

Architecture and equipment

The church, located about 284 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , as a nave construction with a bell tower crowned with a cross. The neighboring rectory has the address Schulweg 2 .
