Holy Cross Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche or Cruciskirche , also known as the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross , is a name of churches that are consecrated or named after the Holy Cross on which Jesus died.

It is often used in churches where there relics of the cross are (according to medieval custom had an altar with a relic be provided, so a certified crosspiece was a prerequisite for the construction of him zugeweihten church). Patronage is exaltation of the cross ( Latin Exaltatio Sanctae Crucis , September 14, in some denominations also other days).

To be distinguished are the churches on the discovery of the cross , whose patronage is the discovery of the cross (May 3, Catholic, March 6, or May 7, Orthodox). In addition, there are Orthodox cross processions on August 1st and a few moving celebrations, such as adoration and veneration of the Holy Cross on Good Friday , which are rarely church patronage.
