Holy Cross Church

The Holy Cross Church in Otterndorf an der Elbe is the seat of the local Roman Catholic community, it belongs to the Bremerhaven Dean's Office in the Diocese of Hildesheim . The chapel of the Holy Heart of Jesus in Neuhaus (Oste) , which also belongs to the community , was profaned in 2013 .

The church was built in 1952 as a single-aisled building with a gable top and is around 2 meters above sea level . It was consecrated on December 7, 1952 by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens . In 1956 the parish of Otterndorf was established. In 1976 the building was completely renovated. The artistic equipment was created by Claus Kilian . In 1981 the parish was raised to a parish. In 2015 the last local pastor retired, but stayed in Otterndorf.

Today, in addition to displaced persons and their descendants, new citizens from southern and western Germany, Poland, Italy, the former Soviet Union and Portugal are important groups within the community.

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the church includes the political communities Balje , Belum , Bülkau , Cadenberge , Geversdorf , Ihlienworth , Neuenkirchen , Neuhaus , Nordleda , Odisheim , Osterbruch , Otterndorf, Steinau , Wanna and Wingst with almost 1,300 Catholics (as of 2015).
