history

The place was first mentioned in 1146 as Geverstorpe. Due to the ending “village” in Geverstorpe, the place probably dates back to around 850. The first settler, a fisherman named Gevers or Gevert, is said to have been the namesake. The name Gevers comes from Gevetke, the old Germanic term for craftsmen in the village.

A schoolmaster and a private school were first mentioned in Geversdorf in 1580. From 1619 until the purchase of the second building at An der Kirche 93 in 1625, the first schoolhouse was a building at Deichstrasse 119. A larger schoolhouse was bought in 1680 and rebuilt in 1726 after it burned down in 1720. The last Geversdorfer school building was built in 1858 at No. 103. It served as a school in Geversdorf until it was closed in 1969.

Other schools in the municipality were the “secondary school” Laak from 1700, from 1837 in Itzwörden and from 1877 the “Wiese” schoolhouse, which served as the central school for the municipality on the right of the Oste until 1958.

A “nyge vere”, that is, a new ferry between Geversdorf and Itzwörden, was first mentioned in 1423. It was founded around 1400 by the Archbishop of Bremen. With the construction of the ferry house in Geversdorf in 1870, the Prussian state took over ferry operations until after the First World War. From 1920, the ferry was leased to private operators who, with one interruption in 1945, ensured the ferry service until September 13, 1988. After 565 years, the ferry service was stopped with the provision of the Geversdorfer bascule bridge.

Geversdorfer whalers started their whaling ventures in Greenland without any great economic success in the period from 1766 to around 1821 from the Oste.

The first fire engine in Geversdorf was purchased in 1821 for 200 "Reichsthaler". It was replaced by newer fire engines in 1839 and 1902. From 1939 motorized motorized syringes were used. A first syringe house stood in the curve of today's Deichstrasse and was replaced in 1937/38 by the construction of the new syringe house on the sports field. A compulsory fire brigade carried out its duties until 1934 , after which the voluntary fire brigade took over their duties.

Incorporations

On November 1, 2016, Geversdorf merged with Cadenberge to form a new municipality called Cadenberge.

  • In the center of the district, the St. Andrew's Church rises on a hill . It was first mentioned in 1233. At that time Neuhaus , Belum and Kehdingbruch also belonged to the parish .
The classical interior of the church contains a three-legged baptismal font by Hinrich Kock , cast in 1505, and a Furtwängler organ. The current building with a turret was erected in 1843, the spire was completed in 1906.

Economy and Infrastructure

Geversdorf is the home port for one of the last fishing cutters, which is still used for environmentally friendly hat fishing in the Tidal Elbe area.

The Ostewerft shipyard operations were discontinued after 300 years of history. The company building was partially rebuilt and parts of the company were converted into holiday apartments. The roof garden on the large shipyard hall offers a unique view of the Oste. The shipyard's large tower crane is the widely visible identification symbol for the shipyard and Geversdorf in the flat landscape on the lower Oste .

traffic

Geversdorf is on Landstrasse 111, which has been crossing the Oste in two lanes over a bascule bridge since 1988 . The bridge has a clearance height of 3.80 meters, is 206 meters long and 11 meters wide. Before the bridge was built, the traffic over the Oste was handled by the Geversdorf Ost ferry .
