Protestant Church of the Holy Cross in Klöden

description

building

The building consists of a plastered brick hall with a gable roof, a recessed choir with a wide apse and a square tower on the north side of the choir. The choir and apse have been preserved in parts from the formerly existing Romanesque complex from the 12th century, probably from around 1150. The building underwent first changes in the early 15th century. In 1510 the windows were enlarged, the protruding sandstone frames can be attributed to the Renaissance. The tower with its transverse gable roof and Renaissance gables is based on an inscription from the year 1516. The sacristy is located on the ground floor of the tower . The upper floors can be reached via a round stair tower on the west side. A priest gate at the choir is dated to 1748. In the Romanesque part of the church there are arched vaults from the early 16th century. The cell vaults in the sacristy date from around 1510. The wooden ceiling in the nave of the church is dated to 1684. It was given its current color scheme in 1992. The three-sided gallery is two-story.

altar

The block altar made of sandstone dates from the end of the 12th century. On the altar there is an almost life-size wooden crucifix. The wooden altarpiece from 1684 was placed on the south wall in favor of the crucifix. In the painting it shows the scenes of the crucifixion and the resurrection over a portrait of the Fall on the predella .

Paintings

The consecration crosses and the names of the apostles on the apse arch date from around 1510. Wall paintings from the early 15th century are on a triumphal arch in the form of Christ with the wise and foolish virgins . The figures that were presumably previously available are missing. The stained glass in the form of medallions with coats of arms and donor inscriptions on the southern choir window date from the second half of the 16th century. There are baroque tendril paintings on the gallery parapets.

Others

The church organ was built around 1800. There are several old tombs and epitaphs in the church and its exterior . A damaged triumphal crucifix from the time the church was built is in the sacristy.

Kloden is part of the parish area Annaburg-Prettin Klöden-II in the church district Wittenberg the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
