The chapel is said to have been founded in the 4th century by St. Helena (248 / 250-330), mother of Constantine the Great , who lived in Trier at the beginning of the 4th century. Between 1050 and 1060, the Provost of Trier, Arnulf, built a Romanesque chapel in front of the city walls of medieval Trier : the arms of the cross-shaped building were originally all the same length, and an octagonal tower rose in the center of the crossing . Access was via a portal in the western arm. Even if the floor plan was changed later, the Heiligkreuz Chapel is one of the oldest German church buildings in the pure cross shape. - Several ways of the cross led from the Trier Kaiserthermen to the chapel (1100 steps or 7 footfalls).

Around 1620 the chapel received several structural changes. The western arm was extended to its current dimensions. A sacristy and a chapel-like building were added on the east side . In 1666 figures were donated to the west portal. The chapel was also given new furnishings in the style of the time during the Baroque period.

In 1911/12 an emergency church was built in front of the chapel. In 1944 the chapel was largely destroyed and rebuilt from 1945 to 1958 without the previously existing baroque elements; only the western extension was left in its length. As part of a renovation in 1976/77, the chapel was restored to its original Romanesque color scheme. The walls of the Romanesque portal were relocated to the front wall of the extended west arm.

Between 1960 and 1962, today's parish church was built in the south of the chapel according to plans by the architect Gottfried Böhm . In it stands a group of burials from the 17th century, which comes from the Holy Cross Chapel.
