About this picture
Location in the city of Trier

Heiligkreuz (formerly Wisport ) is one of the 19 districts of the city of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate . The 203.6 hectare district is located on a slightly rising ridge of the Trier Südstadt and at the end of 2006 had 6,766 residents registered as primary or secondary residences.

history

The city wall of Augusta Treverorum , later Trier , ran through today's area of Heiligkreuz . The area within the city wall belonged to the temple district in the Altbachtal . Among other things, there was a podium temple with a 66 × 23 meter foundation ( Tempel am Herrenbrünnchen ) and a Diana statue made of marble.

After the Roman city wall was abandoned, one of the former defensive towers was used as a gate castle called Porta Alba ( Latin for White Gate) in the Middle Ages . A small farming settlement developed around them, which was named Wisport (also: Alben ) after the Torburg . The Wisportstrasse in Trier still bears witness to this today .

In the middle of the 11th century, a chapel in the shape of a cross was built here, which was called the Holy Cross Chapel . After the chapel, which is still the center of the local district, the place finally got its current name. The village immediately around this chapel is called the Alt-Heiligkreuz today.

In the 13th century, when enemies of the Archbishop of Trier withdrew to the Porta Alba, he stormed the building and then laid it down.

From the Middle Ages onwards, the Daufborn brook , now known as Herrenbrünnchen, which rises in Heiligkreuz , was used by the city of Trier to supply water. The water from Heiligkreuz received among others the Petrusbrunnen on the Trier main market and the Georgsbrunnen on the Kornmarkt . When Maximilian I came to Trier for the Reichstag in 1512, a seal hunt was held in the pond near Daufborn to entertain the emperor.

In the 18th century, Heiligkreuz only consisted of a few houses. The rule over the place was divided between the city of Trier, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias and the Abbey of St. Irminen . In the 19th century Heiligkreuz was an independent community.

In 1912 Heiligkreuz was incorporated into Trier. The Neu-Heiligkreuz housing estate was built in the direction of Mariahof and Olewig in the 1950s.
