Olewig is one of the 19 districts of the city of Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate .

geography

The district is located in the Olewiger Valley on the Olewiger Bach , into which the Brettenbach also flows. To the north, the valley is bounded by the Petrisberg , on the slopes of which there are numerous vineyards. In the south the Mühlenberg rises, on the back of which lies the Trier district of Mariahof .

history

Olewig Monastery

The legend says that today's district takes its name from the Olewiger Bach. The first Christians in Trier are said to have been baptized here. An oil film is said to have formed on the stream through the anointing. The name comes from the Latin of "oleum" and "via", which roughly means "oil way".

Caspar Olevian was born in Trier in 1536 . The father derived the name Olevian from today's Trier district of Olewig, from which the family originally came.

In 1888, Olewig was spun off from the city of Trier and incorporated into the city of Trier again on July 1, 1930. A partnership with the French community of Barr in Alsace has existed since 1956 . Large village renewal measures have taken place in the town center in recent years .

The Mannheim helmet is found in a Treverian warrior grave from the middle of the 1st century BC. Dated in Trier-Olewig.

Culture and sights

Peter Wilhelm Stein Monument

Buildings

The Peter Wilhelm Stein Monument was erected in 1831 to commemorate the popular head teacher for mathematics at the Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium, Dr. J. Peter Wilhelm Stein , who died at the age of 35 on March 17, 1831. The so-called "monastery" Olewig was built in 1885 and housed an old people's home of the Order of the Borromean Sisters . After the building became the property of the city of Trier, it served as the administrative headquarters of the University of Trier for a while . Another attraction is the parish church of St. Anna, built between 1882 and 1884 according to the plans of the cathedral builder Reinhold Wirtz .

Regular events

The Olewig Wine Festival , officially Trier Wine Festival in the district of Olewig , is a multi-day festival of the local winegrowers that takes place every year on the first weekend in August. It is a four-day event (Friday to Monday) along Olewiger Straße . The highlights of the event include a fireworks display, which will be launched on Friday evening from the heights of the Petrisberg , and the election of the Trier Wine Queen.

Economy and Infrastructure

Despite the early incorporation, the village structure of the old wine-growing village of Olewig was preserved. Even today there are several winemakers who cultivate the surrounding vineyards . There are also several wine bars and restaurants.

traffic

Since Olewig is located directly on one of the two main traffic axes that connect downtown Trier with the university and the high-altitude districts, the district is exposed to high traffic loads. For many years, however, traffic has been routed past the old town center through the Riesling Wine Route. The town center itself has been partially redesigned to reduce traffic in recent years.
