history

Biewer was first mentioned in a document in 929 . Archaeological finds, however, show that the Biewer area was settled much earlier. At the time the city of Trier was founded in 16 BC BC , a Roman road led from Trier via Biewer along the Moselle, and then continued through the Eifel to Cologne . Along this street there were some Roman dwellings and a Roman burial ground at the height of Biewers .

Culture

A nationally known specialty of Biewer is every year on Shrove Tuesday held archipelago jump . The skerries jump is a kind of dance dance in which a long chain of people jumping and jumping, holding hands, snakes through the streets of Biewer at the beginning of the carnival parade. The origin of this custom has not been explored to this day, but it is assumed that Celtic customs were used to drive away winter. The Echternach jumping procession, which takes place annually in neighboring Luxembourg , and the Furry Dance on Flora Day (May 8th) in Helston ( Cornwall , Great Britain ), have similarities to the skerries .

State Youth Home

The most important monument is the former St. Jost Leprosy Hall (Trier) with infirmary, chapel and the former cemetery .

The building , which was built in 1936/37 as a state youth home , also known as the house of the NSDAP and the Grossheim of the Hitler Youth (HJ) , was built by Heinrich Otto Vogel and E. Winklers according to the plans of the head of the municipal building department from the time of National Socialism . Alongside the current old buildings of the Trier University of Applied Sciences, it is the most important architectural monument from the time of National Socialism in Trier
