Archipelago

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The archipelago in the Biewer district of Trier is a spectacle that takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday, in which the fools dance and sing songs through the streets, similar to the Echternach jumping procession . The jumping fools are often followed by a parade with various motif floats with 650 to 850 participants. Every year up to 9000 spectators come to watch the archipelago jump. Some sources even speak of 30,000 viewers. The origin of the event is still unclear today. In 1937 the archipelago is mentioned in the Trierischer Volksfreund as a "traditional custom". It is believed to have a Celtic origin: The archipelago was probably originally, like many carnival customs, an apotropaic act to drive away ghosts.
