The Affligem Abbey ( Dutch Sint-Pieters-en-Paulusabdij Affligem ) is a Benedictine abbey in Affligem in the province of Flemish Brabant , about 5 kilometers east of Aalst and 20 km north-west of Brussels . Founded on June 28, 1062 by Count Palatine Hermann II , it was for a long time the house abbey of the Dukes of Brabant and the finest in Brabant ( Latin primaria Brabantiae ). In the wake of the French Revolution , the abbey was closed in 1796. In 1870 another convent moved in. In 2010 the abbey numbered about 18 monks. The abbey is also known for its long tradition of brewing beer.
