Hermann II (Lorraine)

Hermann II (* around 1049; † September 20, 1085 in Dalhem ) was Count Palatine of Lorraine, Count in Zülpichgau , Ruhrgau and Brabant .

He was the son of Count Palatine Heinrich I of Lorraine ( Ezzonen ) and Mathilde of Verdun, daughter of Duke Gozelo of Lorraine ( Wigeriche ). Around 1080 he married Adelheid von Weimar-Orlamünde († 1100), daughter of Margrave Otto von Orlamünde-Weimar .

As the successor of his father († 1060), Hermann can be traced back as Count Palatine from 1064. Between 1060 and 1064 he was under the guardianship of the Archbishop of Cologne, Anno II.

Hermann was represented in the Duisburg-Kaiserswerther county (1065, 1071) and remained count in the Ezzonian counties of Ruhrgau and Zülpichgau .

In the Brabantgau he was installed by Henry IV (from 1085/1086 Landgraviate Brabant) and founded the Affligem Abbey .

Hermann II fell in a duel against Vicedux Albert III from Lower Lorraine . from Namur near his castle at Dalhem in the county of Limburg ( September 20, 1085 ). With his death, the old Lorraine count palatine family of the Ezzonen went out , with the successors in office, this changed from the Lorraine to the Rhenish palatinate.

Hermann's widow Adelheid married Heinrich II von Laach shortly after his death , who was the first Count Palatine near the Rhine .
