Henry I of Lorraine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich I († July 29, 1060 in Echternach Monastery ) was Count Palatine of Lorraine from 1045 to 1060. He was the son of Hezzelin, Count in Zülpichgau , and nephew of Count Palatine Ezzo . Historians gave him several epithets: on the one hand, Furiosus (the madman, but also the madman) because he murdered his wife on July 17, 1060 at Cochem Castle , and Monachus (the monk) because he was sent to the monastery to have his state of mind treated.

Life

The Count Palatine Hermann I was his grandfather. Around 1048 he married Mathilde von Lothringen, daughter of Gotzelo I , Duke of Lower Lorraine from the Wigeriche family and sister of Pope Stephan IX. His only child was Hermann II , who succeeded him as Count Palatine of Lorraine in 1064.

The first signs of his mental illness appeared shortly after 1058, after which he was forced to go to the Gorze monastery for treatment . However, he escaped from Gorze when he heard that his wife had started an affair with one of his relatives, came to Cochem and killed his wife with an ax. Heinrich was then permanently locked in the monastery, this time in the Echternach monastery, where he also died. His property and his office were taken over in trust by Anno II , Archbishop of Cologne as guardian of Heinrich and Mathilde's son Hermann, until Hermann succeeded his father as Count Palatine in 1064.
