Ezzo (Lorraine)
Erenfrid or Ehrenfried , called Ezzo , (* around 955 in Lorraine ; † May 21, 1034 in Saalfeld / Thuringia ) was Count Palatine of Lorraine . The diminutive spellings Ezelin , Hezelin , Hezelo and Hezilo can also be found for him . His descendants are called Ezzonen .
Life
Ezzo's parents were Count Palatine Hermann I of Lothringen († 996) and Heylwig / Heilwig von Dillingen . Ezzo married Mathilde (around 979-1025), the daughter of Emperor Otto II.
In order to ensure adequate care for the emperor's daughter, Ezzo received numerous counties and bailiwicks, including the Auelgau and the Waldenburg in the Sauerland , but also the realm of Saalfeld with the royal court and the Saalfelder Höhe , the southern Orlagau with the areas southwest of Saalfeld to Mountain ridge and the area further south around the Coburg mountain along an important military and trade route from the Saale to the Main .
He controlled the major long-distance routes, e.g. B. with the help of the Tomburg near Rheinbach (from 1000) and the Siegburger Michaelsberg . This started a power struggle with the Archdiocese of Cologne . Ezzo's daughter Richeza bequeathed part of her land, including Saalfeld, the southern Orlagau and the Coburg region in 1063 to this diocese, from which the Benedictine Abbey of Saalfeld arose.
In 1024 the couple founded the Benedictine monastery Brauweiler , in which both were buried.
