The Academy of European Law (ERA) is an international training and discussion center for lawyers. As a public foundation based in Trier , it has the task of promoting awareness, understanding and the application of European law .
Job profile
In conferences, seminars, language courses in legal English and through e-learning, the academy offers legal practitioners the opportunity to acquire or deepen knowledge in various areas of European law. The mostly multilingual events offered in the conference center of the Academy in Trier or in Brussels and other European cities are aimed at judges, public prosecutors, lawyers, notaries, lawyers from business, administration, associations and non-governmental organizations, scientists and other people dealing with legal issues. In addition, the Academy offers a forum for the discussion of legal policy proposals and developments at European level and thus contributes to the creation of a pan-European public.
history
The establishment of the academy was closely linked to the increasing speed of European integration and the completion of the internal market in 1992. In 1990 the European Parliament recommended the establishment of a training center for lawyers in order to improve the uniform implementation of European law. In 1991 the parliament supported the proposal of some MEPs and politicians from Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate to establish a European Law Academy in Trier, near the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. In 1992 the academy was established as a public foundation under German law. The founding donors were the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the City of Trier and the Association for the Promotion of the Academy of European Law. Shortly afterwards, the other German states and the Federal Republic of Germany and, from 2000, other member states of the European Union joined as donors. In the meantime, 25 EU countries have sponsored the academy.
structure
An international team of lawyers is responsible for the conception of the training events, which is divided into four specialist areas: European private law, European business law, European public law and European criminal law. Speakers come from a Europe-wide network of experts from legal practice, teaching and politics. In addition to the conference contributions and the foundation capital, the institutional funding of the European Union and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate contribute significantly to the funding of the academy.
Former President of the European Commission Jacques Santer is the President of the Board of Trustees, which is responsible for deciding on fundamental questions of business policy and approving the budget . The President of the Finnish Supreme Court, Pauliine Koskelo , chairs the Board of Trustees . The director of the academy is Wolfgang Heusel.
Publications
Together with Springer-Wissenschaftsverlag, ERA is the publisher of the quarterly legal journal ERA Forum , whose articles are based on a selection of the best speakers at their conferences. Most of the articles are published in English. There are also German and French contributions, each with a short summary in English. The magazine is aimed at all legal practitioners who are interested in current European law topics.
