The Catholic parish church Heilig Kreuz in Münster (usually called Kreuzkirche in Münster vernacular ) forms the center of the Kreuzviertel north of the promenade ring .

architecture

The Holy Cross Church is a neo-Gothic basilica on a cross plan. The crossing is widened in a star shape and carries a slender roof turret on the roof, which is raised here . The church tower is 87 meters high.

history

The church was built from 1899 to 1902 according to plans by Bernhard and Hilger Hertel . Initially the Rectorate Church of the parish Liebfrauen-Überwasser , it was elevated to a parish church in 1905. The tower was completed in 1908. Until the reconstruction of St. Paulus Cathedral after the Second World War , the Holy Cross Church served as a procathedral . In 1946, after his return from Rome , the newly appointed Cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen celebrated his first and only pontifical office as cardinal there on March 17, 1946 , and only five days later the pontifical request for the suddenly deceased cardinal took place there.

Pastor Thomas Frings , who is also the diocese's art representative, had a widely visible violet LED light installed in the church tower at the beginning of Lent 2013, which has the typical Lent color and since Ash Wednesday , February 13, 2013, instead of the usual lighting by The timer was switched on between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. and between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. in the morning.

Since August 2015 there has been an illuminated lettering on the tower of the Kreuzkirche with the four words "Yes, I'm here", made of letters about one meter high. One of the words in the lettering is placed on one of the sides of the tower, above the tower clock. The model for this installation is an installation on the tower of a church in Amsterdam.

Organs

The organ of the Kreuzkirche was built between 1904 and 1908 by Friedrich Fleiter (Münster). The organ was rebuilt in the 1960s. These changes were reversed in 2001-2003 by the organ builder Fleiter . The instrument was technically overhauled and placed in a new case. The pipework was reconstructed according to the historical condition. The disposition has been expanded by six registers (marked with n in the overview) and the instrument has been equipped with an electrical setting system. The organ has slider chests, the key actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
