The Kreuzviertel is a district of the independent city of Münster in Westphalia . The Kreuzviertel extends over part of the area of the former Uppenberg farmers on the northern edge of the city center, mainly around the Holy Cross Church and belongs to the Mitte district. The borders of the Kreuzviertel are officially between Kanalstrasse in the east, Cherusker- or Friesenring in the north, Grevener Straße / Neutor in the west and the promenade in the south. Often, however, the eastern border is only seen at the Aa or Gartenstrasse.

The postal codes 48149 (west / south) and 48147 (north / east) apply in the Kreuzviertel .

architecture

The Kreuzviertel is characterized by dense, closed development. More than any other district in Münster, it is made up of old buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Century. These typically have two upper floors and an attic. During the Second World War , the Kreuzviertel was less badly hit than the 91% destroyed inner city of Münster , but it was also about 40 to 60% destroyed. Even today it is easy to see in some streets where the bombs fell, as the architecturally very different pre-war and post-war buildings sometimes alternate directly. Only in exceptional cases were attempts made to adapt the style of the houses built after the war to the buildings from the turn of the century. However, many of the often elaborately decorated houses from the imperial era survived the air raids of World War II . Examples of the typical Kreuzviertel architecture can be found in almost every street.

With rare exceptions such as the front garden at Stierlinstrasse 10, front gardens are mostly nonexistent or only very small in the Kreuzviertel. Due to the narrow development, there is usually only little space for gardens on the rear of the houses.

Buildings and parks

In the Kreuzviertel are among others:

Furthermore, on the southern edge of the Kreuzviertel, there is the Buddenturm, the only surviving defensive tower of the medieval city fortifications of Munster, and one of the city's two water bears still standing on Kleimannstrasse . Furthermore there is a barracks area of the 1st German-Dutch Corps in the extreme southwest of the Kreuzviertel .

Places

From west to east, the following places in the Kreuzviertel are worth mentioning:

  • Kanonierplatz: Here you will find the arthouse cinema “ Schloßtheater ”, the only cinema in Münster north of the city center, as well as a kiosk
  • Studtplatz: The square not far from the Neutor is surrounded by roses.
  • Nordplatz: This square is located at the intersection of the busiest streets in the district
  • Coerdeplatz : Located on the south-eastern edge of the Kreuzviertel on the promenade, the Coerdeplatz with several larger lawns is a popular place for sunbathing, barbecuing and playing in summer

Living

The local recreation areas Wienburgpark and Promenade are not far from or directly on the Kreuzviertel . Nevertheless, with a few exceptions, the Kreuzviertel is a very quiet area.

As a result, rents, together with the Aaseestadt district, are the highest in Münster outside the city center. For most streets in the Kreuzviertel, rent is assumed to be 16% higher than the average in Münster. The Kreuzviertel is considered to be one of the most sought-after residential areas in Münster, which the former Mayor Berthold Tillmann summarized in his saying: "There are two types of people in Münster: some live in the Kreuzviertel, the others want to live here." There are several in the Kreuzviertel Daycare centers and several playgrounds. There are few supermarkets, shopping and nightlife options, restaurants and snack bars in the Kreuzviertel itself and more often on the outskirts (for example in the York Center and in the Kuhviertel ).

The Kreuzviertel is a typical example of gentrification . In the 1970s, it was a residential area that was heavily influenced by students, as many old buildings had not yet been refurbished and offered inexpensive “student stalls” and shared apartments. Families with children, on the other hand, often moved to the suburban surrounding area during the 1970s and 80s , which is due to the problematic traffic and parking space situation as well as the lack of green and open spaces to play. The total number of inhabitants fell, but the proportion of students rose to a fifth by 1985. In 1977 the Kreuzviertel was included in the urban renewal project “Inner City Program to Improve Living Quality”. The appearance of the quarter has been visibly enhanced through renovation. However, the goal of maintaining or creating affordable housing for families was hardly achieved. At 11% (as of 2005), the proportion of children and young people is still noticeably below the city average; the proportion of students, on the other hand, has fallen sharply (2005: approx. 10%), especially in favor of singles and high-income couples without children . Two thirds of households consist of only one person, only 6% of households consist of four or more people. The average household size is therefore 1.5 (in Münster a total of 1.9). Despite this social change, the Kreuzviertel has always remained a residential area, especially for residents with higher educational qualifications, which is cited as a reason for a largely conflict-free life together or side by side.

Satisfaction with one's own living environment is slightly higher in the Kreuzviertel than it already is on average in Münster (88% satisfied or very satisfied; in Münster 85% in total). According to a survey by the Institute for Geography Münster in 2006, criteria that contributed particularly to satisfaction were the atmosphere and attractiveness of the quarter, the design and condition of buildings in the streets, cleanliness and order, as well as shopping opportunities for daily needs. On the other hand, the main criticism was the provision of parking spaces, and some of the residents also the provision of apartments and leisure opportunities for young people.

traffic

The main traffic artery of the Kreuzviertel in north-south direction is Nordstraße , which bears the name “Am Kreuztor” in the south and “Wienburgstraße” in the north. In the east-west direction, Melchersstrasse should be mentioned. These streets as well as the extension of Melchersstraße to the east (Wichernstraße / Kerßenbrockstraße) are the only streets in the Kreuzviertel with a connection to the municipal public transport of Stadtwerke Münster . The use of other bus lines is possible at the stops on the major streets that surround the Kreuzviertel.

The traffic situation is problematic for motorized individual traffic. Many streets are one-way streets and are often narrowly parked on both sides due to the lack of parking spaces in the district. On Maximilianstrasse and its extensions, Hoya- , Studt- and Lazarettstrasse , it is possible to drive through the Kreuzviertel from east to west. In the opposite direction, this is possible on Melchersstrasse and the extensions Wichernstrasse and Kerßenbrockstrasse .

As is common in Münster, cyclists have fewer problems in traffic. However, the southern end of Grevener Straße on the western edge of the Kreuzviertel is the only main traffic artery in Münster without separate cycle paths.

The Münster marathon traditionally also runs through the Kreuzviertel.
