Medal of the Münster Marathon 2003

The Münster Marathon (official name Volksbank-Münster-Marathon ) is a marathon that, organized by the Münster-Marathon eV , has been held annually in September in the Westphalian city of Münster since 2002 and has now established itself among the ten most popular marathons in Germany. A relay marathon for teams of four runners has been part of the program since 2006. Approx. 270 children take part in the Stadtwerke Kids Marathon every year and around 100 participants are expected for the charity run for the UNESCO Foundation - Education for Children in Need (since 2012). The main sponsor and namesake of the marathon is the United Volksbank Münster . In 2020 the event had to be canceled due to the corona virus.

Route

The route, officially measured by the German Athletics Association, offers a mixture of city and landscape marathons. The start is on Schlossplatz in front of the Prince-Bishop's Palace . First, turn off at the Aegidiitor towards the city center, walk past the Überwasserkirche and pass the St. Paulus Cathedral to the north . The promenade leads to the Buddenturm . You return to the promenade via a loop and walk past the Zwinger in a southerly direction to Ludgeriplatz . There, another loop follows through the city center, which leads past St. Ludgeri onto the Salzstraße . Now it goes to the southwest from the city center on a loop around the Aasee and the central cemetery , before it goes past Gievenbeck to the northwest into the open country. After reaching the northernmost point of the route at km 21 in Nienberge , it goes into the landscape west of the federal motorway 1 and over the Aa to the Roxel district . From there it goes on a loop through Gievenbeck and then back into the city center to the destination on Prinzipalmarkt .

The course is fairly flat, with a height difference of 19 meters between the lowest and highest point. Timekeeping was done by ChampionChip until 2015 , and from 2016 with the Chrono-track timing system. The finish line ends after 5:30 hours.
