The Salzstrasse is the oldest trade route in the Westphalian Münster and at the same time a lively shopping street with several historical buildings and sights. The length of the salt road is 550 meters. Since 1977 it has been a pedestrian zone for a length of 400 meters . Their degree of chain store in the section between Prinzipalmarkt and Erbdrostenhof is around 77 percent.

history

The salt road was first mentioned in 1346 under the name "vicus salis". Originally, the salt road was a narrow dirt road. Long-distance traders used this as the rear entrance to the farm buildings of the manorial courtyards on Alter Steinweg . The north-western section of the street between Lambertikirchplatz and Altes Steinweg was known as the “salt staircase” until the 18th century, but it also bore the current name of the salt road. The rest of the street between Ringoldsgasse and the Servatiitor was called Servatiistraße.

Arnold "Arndt" Bischopinck was a prince-bishop city judge between 1408 and 1416, who lived with his wife Christine on Salzstrasse.

In the 1980s, Hermann Fechtrup, as Münster's senior city director, played a key role in the redesign of Salzstrasse.

course

The course of the road has been documented as unchanged since around the 1880s. The Salzstraße runs in an east-west direction starting from Servatiiplatz , crosses the promenade and ends at the northern end of the Prinzipalmarkt at the Lambertikirche . Sights include the Münster City Museum and the so-called "Baroque Island". It includes the baroque city palace Erbdrostenhof (1753–1757) for the former highest secular official of the Duchy of Münster and the Clemenskirche (1745–1753), one of the most important baroque church buildings in northwest Germany . The owner of both structures was Johann Conrad Schlaun . The Dominican Church from 1725 , built by Lambert Friedrich von Corvey, also belongs to the Baroque Island .

Opposite the Erbdrostenhof is the Café Grotemeyer, now one of the last coffee houses in Münster. It was founded in 1850 by Albert and Berta Grotemeyer on Aegidiistraße and reopened in 1912 by Hugo Grotemeyer on Salzstraße.

The Münster tram operated a line on which the tracks regularly squeaked loudly in the sharp bend between Salzstraße and Alten Steinweg. This place was given the name "howling curve".

Hanseatic Lübeck

A special feature of the Salt Road are the stones from all Hanseatic cities embedded in the pavement and surrounded by brass. They were installed in 1993 on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Münster in 793 and are a reminder of the city's membership and importance in the Hanseatic League .

There is a relief model on the church square of Sankt Lamberti . Here, not only for the visually impaired, the Salzstrasse becomes tangible .

Pedestrian counts

After Ludgeristraße and Prinzipalmarkt, Salzstraße is one of Münster's busiest streets. This result results from the pedestrian frequency measurement, which the business development agency carries out once a year.
