The Servatiiplatz is a place in Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the junction of the important streets Bahnhofstrasse, Eisenbahnstrasse, Wolbecker Strasse and Von-Vincke-Strasse in the immediate vicinity of the main station .

history

The square got its name from the St. Servatii church a few meters to the southwest . Before the demolition of the city fortifications around 1770, the servatiitor was located within the city wall at this point . Around 1900, according to the plans of the councilor and honorary citizen of the city of Münster, Adolf Kleimann, an ornate decorative space was created, which was decorated with carpet beds, palm trees and benches. This also included the Servatiibrunnen, which was dismantled in the early 1930s and created a tall fountain. The palms were 32 large phoenix palms, which were set up here in the summer months as a gift from the Duke of Arenberg from Nordkirchen Castle . The Peace Oak, which was planted on March 21, 1871, is also no longer there.

Memorial to indivisible Germany

On December 18, 1960, one year before the wall was built , Anni Buschkötter erected the Indivisible Germany memorial on Servatiiplatz .

The Signal-Iduna-Haus was built on the square in 1960/1961 , which is now a listed building. In 1990 and 1991, as part of a historical redesign, the original context of the promenade and thus also of Servatii Square was restored. The seats were rearranged, a pergola was installed and the lawn hollow was remodeled.

From November 2011 to May 2012 the Servatiiplatz was occupied by the group Occupy Münster. An attempt by the city of Münster at the end of April 2012 to vacate the space by ruling was unsuccessful; in May 2012 the occupation was ended by mutual agreement.
