The Ludgeristraße is the busiest shopping street in Westphalian Münster . It is named after the Frisian missionary Liudger , who was ordained the first bishop of Münster in 805.

Ludgeristraße runs in a north-south direction, starting at the southern end of the Prinzipalmarkt at the Stadthausturm and the Münster arcades , passing the Ludgerikirche , Marienplatz and the Stern-Apotheke , crossing the promenade and ending at Ludgeriplatz .

The shopping mile in the best-frequented area between Prinzipalmarkt and Verspoel has a degree of chain store of almost 90 percent.

history

In the Middle Ages, numerous inns and pubs were to be found on Ludgeristraße . The oldest knight's hostel was the Moder-Even-Haus in today's Mariengasse, where Count Dietrich von Volmarstein regularly stayed with seven people and 18 horses.

In the middle of the 19th century a Prussian post office was set up in the inn “In der verkehrte Welt” . Albert Lortzing , who belonged to the court theater in Detmold from autumn 1826 , lived in the upper floor of this inn for seven years with his wife and children from the end of December 1826, which is why this building is now called "Lortzinghaus".

In addition, there used to be some aristocratic courts on Ludgeristraße, including the baroque Merveldter Hof at number 36 as the largest aristocratic court in the city. According to the church records of St. Ludgeri , 35 counts of the Merveldt aristocratic family were born here between 1718 and 1915, before the farm was destroyed in the Second World War.

Around 1900 the Münster tram operated a railway line on Ludgeristraße.

In air raids on Münster in the Second World War , much of the adjacent buildings was destroyed. In July 1945, large parts of Ludgeristraße were buried under heaps of rubble. Later it was initially traffic-calmed and finally converted into a pedestrian zone in 1969 . The paving was renewed in 1994.

Today most retailers have given way to larger chain stores. In addition, there is a lack of dining options due to the rental prices. One of the few historic retailers on Ludgeristraßen is a wine shop at Marienplatz, which, according to information in Münster's oldest address book from 1863, was already being operated by Ferdinand Hassenkamp as a " colonial goods store" at that time . In addition, the “Conditorei und Cafe” of the Krimphove family and the court jeweler JC Osthues are already listed in the address book from 1900.

Pedestrian counts

Every year, the Münster Economic Development Corporation (WFM) and Jones Lang LaSalle measure the footfall in Ludgeristraße. While the WFM scrutinizes the balance of power on the inner city streets of Münster, the international real estate company compares the strongest shopping locations in Germany.

In 2008, the Ludgeristraße at Jones Lang LaSalle achieved fourth place behind Schildergasse , Kaufingerstraße and Zeil for the first time among the ten most visited shopping streets in Germany with 10,820 pedestrians counted within an hour. In previous years, there were regularly between 8,000 and 9,000 passers-by per hour. In 2009, 9,390 passers-by were counted per hour. 10th place in a nationwide comparison. In 2010, 8,270 visitors passed Ludgeristraße (14th place). In 2011, the count was 8,645 passers-by per hour (14th place). In 2012, Ludgeristraße improved to ninth place in the nationwide ranking with 9,420 passers-by per hour. In 2012, Ludgeristraße took first place in the number of pedestrians in cities with up to half a million inhabitants. About 63% of the passers-by are on the northern part of Ludgeristraße. The visitor numbers determined on Saturdays are on average more than 80% above the peak values determined on weekdays. In 2013, Jones Lang La Salle counted 6,825 pedestrians per hour on Ludgeristraße (22nd place). On a Saturday in 2013 Engels & Völkers Commercial counted 4928 passers-by per hour.

For many years, Ludgeristraße has been the leader in pedestrian frequency measurement by the Münster Economic Development Corporation, followed by Prinzipalmarkt and Salzstraße. While the three streets used to be the city's main shopping streets, a network of many streets with good to very good traffic has now emerged.
