The Ferrocarril del Pacífico SA , shortly Fepasa is a railway company in Chile , based in Santiago de Chile . Ferrocarril del Pacífico is mainly active in rail freight transport and is the country's largest provider of transport services in this area.

history

In the 20th century, the Chilean state railways EFE had a monopoly for the operation of rail-bound transport systems; but due to a lack of willingness to invest, the rail network deteriorated. Therefore, in the early 1990s, the decision was made to spin off the freight transport sector into a separate company. Fepasa was founded on September 15, 1993; in 1994 EFE sold the majority of its shares, which is why Fepasa is now a private railway company . By investing in the rail network and in the vehicles during the first years after privatization, the transport volume could be increased compared to the times of the state railways.

In addition to a few road-based transport services, Fepasa is mainly active in freight transport by rail. For this purpose, 89 diesel-powered and some electric locomotives and over 3000 freight cars of various types are available, with Fepasa serving in particular the broad gauge lines (1676 mm) between the greater Santiago de Chile and Puerto Montt area. Fepasa performs services for agriculture , industry and mining and offers a 600-kilometer connection between the country's largest container ports . In addition, Fepasa transports more than 50% of the waste from the city of Santiago de Chile in specially converted wagons to the landfills to the east .
