The high bunker on Lazarettstraße is on the Münster monuments list together with the “Schützenhof Bunker” on Wörthstraße and the so-called “Bunker School” in St. Mauritz. It dates from 1941 to 1943. According to the plans, it offered a total of 548 people protection from Allied bombing raids . The regular occupancy was around 1200 people, however, for individual air strikes an occupancy of up to five times the planned capacity is occupied. The bunker was the second completed of a total of 15 planned large bunkers within the city. After the Second World War, the British military government temporarily used it as a storage room for maps. Today it is owned by the city of Münster.
A special feature of the complex is the construction, which is based on a medieval or early modern fortification. It was supposed to integrate better into the historical cityscape of Münster in order to make identification from the air more difficult. For this purpose, it was also built in close proximity to the promenade , the former city fortification, on which there are other old fortifications.
In addition to the architecture of the air raid shelter itself, the immediate surroundings were also adapted accordingly. This includes a moat with an access bridge specially created for the bunker. However, at no time was there water in the man-made trench. Instead, it contains, among other things, two plane trees and a horse chestnut , which are under nature protection.
